Always one of the leaders in the Premières Côtes, Château Carignan has produced a ripely juicy 2006. It is a wine that brings considerable weight, the dark fruits melding into tannins. It should age well over the next 5–6 years.

Heavy wood aging dominates this rich wine at this stage. That should integrate to leave an almost California ripeness from the 100% Merlot. It has a full and rounded structure, cushioned by generous fruits.

A dark-colored wine, smoky and toasty, perhaps too much. It has weight, with shafts of fruit coming through the wood dryness. The main wine of the château is better balanced than this special cuvée.

Powerful, ripe fruit, now beginning to open up, is the dominant character of this wine. It’s full in the mouth, packed with black plums and ripe damsons and finished with soft tannins and a slight warmth.

This is the fruity side of Carignan, a wine with black currants and bright fruit flavors. It has structure from the 40% Cabernets in the blend and a smoky finish that adds some spice.
