Château d’Aydie

Château d’Aydie, owned by the Laplace family, is widely recognized as a leading producer of Madiran. Frédéric Laplace, who inherited of the family business that dates back to 1759, took charge of the estate and became a pioneer winemaker of the region by bottling and selling his Madiran wine under his own name when the appellation was first created in 1948. Located in the heart of Gascony in Southwest France, Madiran, along with Cahors, is one of the famous “black wines” of France: deep, dark, long-lived wines that incorporate micro-oxygenation. The main grape of the regional red wines is Tannat, but the Château also blends in small proportions of Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon to some of their wines, adding complexity and balance.

This is smooth, rich and elegant, with black fruits and acids that are contained within a firm, understated structure. It has power, but it’s contained in a velvet glove.  — R.V.  (3/1/2013)

Very young, very closed up, but it’s possible to tell that this will be an immense wine, even from the 2004 vintage. The acids, the dense structure, the hints of wood and the power of this wine are already in place. Soon, the fruit will come bursting in.  — R.V.  (11/15/2008)

With the richness of the vintage, the natural tannins of Tannat are tamed by the welter of intense black fruits, sweet berries and Arabica coffee. The structure is exhibited in the dusty tannins under all the fruit.  — R.V.  (3/1/2012)

Château d’Aydie 2009 Tannat (Madiran)

  1. $35
A new-wood-dominated wine, this has a heavy toast character, with extracted licorice and dark chocolate flavors as well as a big black-plum note. Rich and weighty, with juicy acidity, this demands many years of aging.  — R.V.  (3/1/2013)

It’s certainly a big wine, as befits Madiran, but the tannins are well tamed, and contribute to richness rather than dryness. The texture is rough velvet, a smoothness topped by some tannins. Fruit flavors range from black figs to dark plum skins. It could evolve over 5 years, at least.  — R.V.  (11/15/2008)

Château d’Aydie 2007 Tannat (Madiran)

  1. $20
Powerfully rich, with plenty of the dry tannins of Tannat, but also rich sweet plum fruits and concentrated wood to soften and round. There is acidity, but it fits comfortably into the firm fruits and solid final chunkiness.  — R.V.  (3/1/2010)
