Château de Jau 2001 Talon Rouge Syrah (Côtes du Roussillon)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $20
Young and boisterous, with a bright purple tint. This is sweet, jammy and grapy stuff, but firm tannins and lively acids keep it largely in balance. The palate is huge, with tarry, smoky edges surrounding rich plum fruit. A strapping middleweight for near-term drinking.  — M.S.  (1/1/2004)

Château de Jau 2009 Muscat (Muscat de Rivesaltes)

  1. $25
Simultaneously sweet and fresh with attractive, intense notes of peach and lychee fruit flavors mingling with orange blossom and rose floral accents. Medium full and slightly viscous but with a clean, lengthy finish.  — L.B.  (7/1/2011)

Château de Jau 2002 Grenache Blanc (Grand Roussillon)

  1. $26
Made entirely from Grenache Blanc and fortified to 16% alcohol, this is an intriguing dessert wine. After aging in barrel for three years, it’s taken on some nutty overtones, yet still retains a perfumed quality and orange-citrus flavors. Probably best with cheeses or on its own.  — J.C.  (12/15/2007)

Château de Jau 2000 Rouge Red (Côtes du Roussillon)

  • Best Buy
  1. $10
Take a sniff and you’ll get blueberry and graham crackers along with mineral. The mouth is pure and expressive, with size and power. The flavor profile is mostly black plums with supporting oak, and the finish is dry and rewarding. Although the wine leans a bit toward the syrupy and heavy side, it holds the line of balance just enough to qualify as a sure winner…  — M.S.  (2/1/2003)

Lean red fruit and sweet spice aromas lead the way on the bouquet of this blend, made from 45% Syrah, 30% Mourvèdre, 10% Grenache and 15% Carignan. The palate offers more of the same, with a lean structure and a surpringly sweet finish.  — L.B.  (2/1/2012)

A somewhat simple though well-balanced wine with scents of baby powder, cocoa dust, black cherry and raspberry. The palate shows a bit more heft with notes of purple flowers and soft plum guts. Juicy and approachable with soft tannins and a medium-length finish.  — L.B.  (5/1/2010)
