Château d'Or et de Gueules 2009 Trassegum Red (Costières de Nîmes)

  • Cellar Selection
This standout from the Costières has all the ingredients to age. It starts off with gorgeous aromas of garrigue, baking spices and black cherries, then delivers a rich mouthful of drying tannins. And at the end, the fruit comes through on the lengthy finish. Try this blend of 50% Syrah, 30% Mourvèdre and 20% Carignan from 2014 on.  — J.C.  (12/15/2011)

Château d'Or et de Gueules 2009 Qu'es Aquo Red (Costières de Nîmes)

This pure Carignan from 80-year-old vines is really interesting aromatically, featuring hints of clove, cinnamon and lavender, but its substantial tannins clamp down hard on the palate, raising the question of whether it has enough fruit concentration to age successfully. Drink now with tannin-taming rare beef or lamb, or cellar it and hope.  — J.C.  (12/15/2011)

Château d'Or et de Gueules 2009 Les Cimels Red (Costières de Nîmes)

Promising notes of dried flowers and herbs give way to fresh blackberry fruit. This is very clean and crisp on the palate, marked by tough tannins on the finish. Give this blend of Syrah, Carignan and Grenache a year or two in the cellar to soften.  — J.C.  (12/15/2011)

Château d'Or et de Gueules 1998 Cuvée Prestige Red (Costières de Nîmes)

  1. $18
Blueberry fruit mingles with cinnamon-tinged oak spice on the nose and palate of this offering. There’s even enough depth and complexity to make it more than a simple quaff, worthy of washing down simply roasted chicken perhaps.  — J.C.  (3/1/2001)

Château d'Or et de Gueules 1998 Red (Costières de Nîmes)

Bears a striking resemblance to blueberry pie in its aromas. Lighter than expected on the palate, before fading on the finish. A pleasant lunch mate to pâté or charcouterie.  — J.C.  (3/1/2001)

Château d'Or et de Gueules 2010 Les Cimels Rosé (Costières de Nîmes)

  • Online Exclusive
This four-variety blend (Cinsault, Mourvèdre, Grenache and Syrah) features strawberries and struck flint on the nose, then appears very crisp and lean on the palate. No doubt it’s meant to be mineral, but it comes across as lacking a bit of fruit, although it is zesty and refreshing.  — J.C.  (12/15/2011)

Château d'Or et de Gueules 2008 Qu'es Aquo Red (Costières de Nîmes)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $37
Made solely from old-vine Carignan, this wine does stand out as being unique among a flight of Costières de Nîme wines. It’s slightly pruny, marked by dried fruit, leather and clove, turning a touch metallic on the finish.  — J.C.  (2/1/2011)
