Château Julien 2004 Bravura Red (Monterey County)

  1. $85
A 50-50 blend of Merlot and Malbec, this is the most expensive wine the chateau has ever produced, a commemoration of their 25th anniversary. It commands attention for dryness and complexity. The usual Bordeaux flavors of blackberries, plums and mocha are weaved into earthier tastes of salty, cured-olive tapenade and sweet miso, enhanced with smoky new oak. This is…  — S.H.  (11/1/2007)

Château Julien 1997 Private Reserve Sur Lie Chardonnay (Monterey County)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $20
Flavorful and displaying quite a lot of complexity at the price. Aromatically rich with creamy, leesy, toasty-oak and spice notes. Pears, orange and cinnamon flavors grace the palate. Positive mouthfeel and a fine acid balance. Long, tasty, complex finish. Editor’s Choice.  — W.E.  (2/1/2000)

Château Julien 2007 Private Reserve Merlot (Monterey County)

  1. $42
Nice to see such a nice Merlot from Château Julien, their best ever. It does what Merlot should, being dry and lush, with complex sour cherry, currant, herb, cocoa and spice flavors wrapped into smooth tannins. A lovely wine for drinking now.  — S.H.  (9/1/2011)

Château Julien 2002 Syrah (Monterey County)

  1. $22
Must come from a warmer part of the county, because the fruit is very ripe and elaborate. Delicious in peppery blackberry, leather and plum flavors, and dry, with rich, complex tannins. A wine to watch.  — S.H.  (10/1/2004)

Château Julien 2000 Estate Chardonnay (Monterey County)

  1. $22
Bright, zesty Monterey fruit stars, dressed in elaborate mango and pineapple flavors. Oak adds vanilla, smoke and an unctuous, sappy texture, while lees contact does its creamy thing. This is a big-boned Chard, slightly sweet and quite spicy.  — S.H.  (12/15/2002)

Château Julien 2000 Syrah (Monterey County)

  1. $10
There’s a ton of true varietal character in this fun wine. It’s very dark in color, and has the nicest aromas of white pepper and blackberries. Tastes just great, rich and filled with berry flavors, bone dry, with smooth tannins. No, it’s not a wine of great complexity. But it’s still a very good wine.  — S.H.  (12/1/2002)

Château Julien 1999 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon (Monterey County)

  1. $22
Darkly colored, brimming with blackberry aromas and oak that hits you across the head. It’s new and well charred, with caramel scents. Tannins are thick and rather aggressive. Ambitious Monterey vintners continue to push against Napa. A wine like this advances the cause, but also shows how much remains to be done.  — S.H.  (11/15/2002)

Château Julien 1999 Estate Vineyard Chardonnay (Monterey County)

  1. $22
A round and pleasant wine with melon, toast and pear aromas and flavors, but a bit on the sweet side. Bright citrus and peach notes add interest, a touch of chalk keeps the sweetness in check, and the oak comes up dramatically on the back end.  — W.E.  (8/1/2001)
