Château Mouton Rothschild

Originally named Château Brane-Mouton, Château Mouton Rothschild was purchased by Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild in 1853 at which point he renamed the infamous estate. While the Pauillac based Chateau is currently one of only five wines to hold the esteemed Premier Cru Classé status, this was not always the case. It was not until 1973, some 118 years after the original Bordeaux Wine Official Classification of 1855, that Chateau Mouton Rothschild was recognized as one of the elite wines of Bordeaux according to our Chateau Mouton Rothschild reviews. The Chateau Mouton Rothschild vineyard includes 205 acres of vines planted with Cabernet Sauvignon (77%), Merlot (11%), Cabernet Franc (10%) and Petit Verdot (2%). In 1922, Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild’s great-grandson Baron Philippe de Rothschild took over operations at Chateau Mouton Rothschild winery and was the first to introduce on premise chateau bottling. In 1946 Baron Philippe decided to have the label of each vintage designed by a famous artist from that particular year, a practice that continues today. In 1988, Baroness Philippine de Rothschild succeeded her father Baron Philippe and has continued the tradition of excellence that Chateau Mouton Rothschild wines represent. Our Chateau Mouton Rothschild ratings indicate that these wines are still some of the most expensive, as well as most revered, in the existence.

Château Mouton Rothschild 2011 Le Petit Mouton Barrel sample Red (Pauillac)

  • Online Exclusive
91-93. Barrel sample. Mouton Rothschild's second wine is showing increasing stature. This vintage shows spice, new wood and Mouton’s signature acidity. It has a soft, rounded texture, with a plump, warm feel.  — R.V.  (5/11/2012)

Château Mouton Rothschild 2003 Barrel sample Red (Pauillac)

90-92 There is way too much wood with this wine, as much as 90% new wood. It suppresses the fruit and raises a question mark over how the balance in the wine will work out. Of course, it's a great wine, but not up to the standards of the other first growths.  — R.V.  (6/3/2004)

90–92. Barrel sample. There’s a great spicy-wood character that dominates this second wine from Mouton-Rothschild. All the right black-currant fruit character and fresh acidity are here, with a light mineral texture.  — R.V.  (4/11/2013)

Château Mouton Rothschild 2002 Aile d’Argent White

  1. $60
Château Mouton Rothschild’s white wine fits easily into the rich, modern style favored for the château’s reds. There are layers of vanilla and wood, with a ripe, round creaminess. Could age, due to good depth of flavor and some complexity from the acidity.  — R.V.  (6/1/2005)

Citrusy, with its character bordering on herbaceous, this is a layered wine. Produced from a portion of the Mouton-Rothschild vineyard, it is rich and deliciously ready to drink, with bright acidity giving a fine lift to the finish.  — R.V.  (5/1/2013)

Château Mouton Rothschild 2008 Le Petit Mouton Red (Pauillac)

Big, solid, firm wine, with an edge that is a little farmyard. It has weight, though, along with smoky, fruity flavors of black plums.  — R.V.  (4/1/2011)

Château Mouton Rothschild 2006 Le Petit Mouton de Mouton Rothschild Red (Pauillac)

  • Online Exclusive
A smoky, perfumed wine, dominated by the proportion of Cabernet Franc. There is prominent wood here, particularly in the aromas, but they are challenged by the black currant fruits. The ripe, sweet fruit gives an immediate freshness and juiciness to the finish.  — R.V.  (3/1/2009)
