Château Phélan-Ségur 2003 Red (Saint-Estèphe)

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $38
Under the ownership of the Gardinier family, this chateau now rivals some of the classed growths, and deserves its crus bourgeois exceptionnel classification. It is certainly full of new wood flavors, but these are not allowed to dominate dense fruit tannins, flavors of black plums and fine layers of acidity. Will certainly age for 10+ years. Imported by Diageo…  — R.V.  (5/1/2006)

Château Phélan-Ségur 2005 Barrel sample Red (Saint-Estèphe)

91-93 Barrel sample. A finely balanced wine, with the steel and tannins of Saint-Estéphe tempered with hugely ripe, concentrated black plum and dark fig flavors. This is elegant while also being powerful.  — R.V.  (6/20/2006)

Château Phélan-Ségur 2000 Red (Saint-Estèphe)

  1. $35
This is initially a somewhat austere wine, but that derives from the tannins of Saint-Estèphe. Underneath those tannins are solid, chunky fruits and a great generosity and richness.  — R.V.  (6/1/2003)

Château Phélan-Ségur 2005 Red (Saint-Estèphe)

A spicy, smoky, wood-dominated wine, which loses its fruit in all these exotic flavors. There is a dark core that will round out and spread the fruit through what should be an impressive wine.  — R.V.  (6/1/2008)

Château Phélan-Ségur 2008 Red (Saint-Estèphe)

This is a woody, toasty wine, which seems to be the style here for the last several years. It has weight, but does need time for the wood to subside and bring out the elegant fruits.  — R.V.  (4/1/2011)

Château Phélan-Ségur 2010 Barrel sample Red (Saint-Estèphe)

89-91 The wine is all tannins, very severe feeling. The toughness masks the fruit, although there is just a hint of juiciness to finish.  — R.V.  (6/25/2011)

Château Phélan-Ségur 2007 Red (Saint-Estèphe)

  1. $33
Fresh berry fruits, light tannins and stalky black currants, sustained by tannins. It is juicy, the wood a mist in the bright fruit flavors. There is some aging potential, maybe 4–5 years.  — R.V.  (4/1/2010)

Château Phélan-Ségur 2009 Barrel sample Red (Saint-Estèphe)

  • Online Exclusive
89-91 Barrel sample. Caramel aromas, a wine that seems over-extracted, tough. The fruit has a juicy element, but misses out on elegance.  — R.V.  (8/9/2010)
