Chester Kidder 2007 Red Wine (Columbia Valley (WA))

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $50
This ups the percentage of Cabernet to 60%, with 25% Syrah, 14% Petit Verdot and just 1% Cabernet Franc. Released almost a full year later than the other Long Shadows reds, it is well-integrated and focused, with high-toned black cherry fruit set in dusty tannins. Scents of sandalwood drift through, along with cocoa and spice. As good or even better than the…  — P.G.  (2/1/2012)

Chester Kidder 2006 Red (Columbia Valley (WA))

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $50
The blend in 2006 is 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Syrah, 10% Petit Verdot and 9% Cabernet Franc. It spent 30 months in 90% new oak. Released a year ago, it has a feminine grace and softness in the aromas, a lovely mix of flowers and spice. The Syrah brightens up the fruit, accenting berry flavors with a hint of pepper, while the Petit Verdot adds clover and violet…  — P.G.  (12/31/2010)

Chester Kidder 2005 Red Wine (Columbia Valley (WA))

  1. $50
The blend is 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Syrah and 5% Merlot; the fruit is sourced from vineyards scattered throughout eastern Washington. Velvety and supple, this is a modulated mix of bright, sassy blackberry and currant fruit, spiced up with the peppery highlights of Syrah. The effect is to move it solidly into the Australian camp, which makes perfect sense, for…  — P.G.  (5/1/2009)

Chester Kidder 2004 Red (Columbia Valley (WA))

  1. $50
The fruit is forward, a mélange of tart and spicy berry and currant flavors, and there is enough concentration to warrant additional cellaring. The influence of new oak is unobtrusive, though it is still a vital part of the mix. Overall, a nice step forward for this Long Shadows wine. 58% Cab, 29% Syrah, 10% Cab Franc, 3% Petit Verdot.  — P.G.  (5/1/2008)

Chester Kidder 2003 Red (Columbia Valley (WA))

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $50
The second vintage of Chester Kidder is quite a different blend from the 2002—38% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Syrah, 14% Merlot, 12% Cab Franc, 5% Malbec, 2% Petit Verdot. Yet despite the obvious effort to craft a vinous all-star, to me it remains somewhat amorphous and a bit over-driven by the barrels. The dominant flavors are all barrel-derived—mocha, coffee grounds…  — P.G.  (3/1/2007)

Chester Kidder 2002 Red (Columbia Valley (WA))

  1. $50
It’s 45% Merlot, 28% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Syrah and 19% Cab Franc, adding up to a somewhat amorphous blend that lacks a bit of focus. There is, on the other hand, plenty of juicy, ripe raspberry fruit, some coffee/espresso scents and a slight whiff of VA. This is the first red wine release from Allen Shoup’s Long Shadows collective.  — P.G.  (4/1/2006)
