Cheval des Andes 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon-Malbec (Mendoza)

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $75
A serious wine for serious wine drinkers. It’s 60% Cabernet and the rest Malbec. Deep, deep and deeper is how to best describe the chewy, fruit-saturated palate, but even better, this wine has guts, balance and aging capacity. Best to hold this joint-venture red from Chateau Cheval-Blanc and Terrazas de Los Andes for at least three years.  — M.S.  (7/1/2005)

Score Chasers: South America 2011
Full, dense and dark, with powerful berry aromas and hints of rubber and leather on the bouquet. The palate breathes complexity and style but also raw power, and the flavors of blackberry, fig paste and herbs are just lusty and rich enough to register as modern Mendoza. Classy and deep; best from 2011–2015. A Malbec-Cabernet-Petit Verdot blend.  — M.S.  (3/1/2011)

Cheval des Andes 2005 Red (Mendoza)

  1. $75
Cheval des Andes brings together Cheval Blanc from St.-Emilion with Terrazas de los Andes, and for the past few years it has been the leader in Bordeaux-style wines from Argentina. The 2004 shows serious barrel notes framing classic aromas of aged gouda, saddle leather, mushroom and concentrated berries. The palate is structured, mildly tannic and layered with…  — M.S.  (5/1/2008)

Cheval des Andes 2007 Red (Mendoza)

  1. $80
A touch saucy on the nose, with tomato and herbal aromas infiltrating baked berry fruit scents. Feels fresh and clacky, with less extract and body than in the past but also more elegance. Tastes snappy and mildly herbal, with a juicy, slightly lean finish. Food friendly; drink now through 2013.  — M.S.  (12/31/2011)
