Chimney Rock 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon (Stags Leap District)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $61
This is Chimney Rock’s best Stags Leap Cabernet since the 2005, and continues a string of successful vintages. Dry and smooth and silky in the mouth, it’s pretty tannic, but very rich, offering waves of cherry, blackberry, blueberry, cocoa and sweet cedar flavors. Absolutely delicious, wonderfully elegant, and should age well for a decade.  — S.H.  (12/1/2010)

Chimney Rock 2008 Tomahawk Cabernet Sauvignon (Stags Leap District)

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $115
This is a frankly delicious young Cabernet, hailing from a small vineyard to showcase its qualities. It’s deeply flavored in blackberries and currants, with the most delicious dark chocolate sweetness. Yet it also has the tannic backbone to last. It’s one of those wines you can drink now, or age for at least six years to see what it can do.  — S.H.  (3/1/2012)

Chimney Rock 2008 Ganymede Cabernet Sauvignon (Stags Leap District)

  1. $105
A textbook illustration of Stags Leap Cabernet. The “velvet glove” is the elaborately ripe, sweet blackberry, cherry and chocolate fruit. The “iron fist” is the tannin structure, so finely woven you hardly notice it, but there it is, offering a coat of astringency and protecting the wine over the next decade.  — S.H.  (3/1/2012)

Chimney Rock 2007 Elevage Red (Stags Leap District)

  1. $78
A brilliant Bordeaux blend, just captivating for its lush fruit, elegance and classy balance. Remarkable for the integrity of tannins, so sturdy and refined, so pure and sweet. A feminine wine, to judge by its soft allure, and yet packed with power and integrity. Beautiful now, although it’s easily one for the next five to seven years. A blend of Merlot, Cabernet…  — S.H.  (2/1/2011)

Absolutely delicious, offering a flood of ripe, sweet blackberry, blueberry, currant, chocolate, anise and spice flavors. Impressive for its savory power, this blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petite Verdot will easily ride out the next 8–10 years.  — S.H.  (3/1/2012)

Chimney Rock 2002 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon (Stags Leap District)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $100
Expensive, yes, but this is a wine of very high quality. The Cabernet Sauvignon shines through, showing enormous black currant flavor, and then there are the wonderfully ripe, smooth tannins that make the wine glide like velvet. It seems to be best now, but should hold for some years.  — S.H.  (12/1/2005)

Chimney Rock 2001 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon (Stags Leap District)

  1. $107
A great Cab showcasing everything good about Napa’s fabulous ’01 Cabs. It’s rich, vibrant and complex, with layers of cassis, cocoa and roasted coffee flavors, and a deft touch of smoky oak. The tannins are sweet, ripe and subtle. Doesn’t clobber you sideways with fruit, but offers elegant, sophisticated drinking.  — S.H.  (7/1/2005)

Chimney Rock 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon (Stags Leap District)

  1. $49
Seductively sweet, with ripe currant and cherry fruit framed by fancy oak, yet the underlying tannins kick in midway. Nowhere near its maximum integration; best left alone through 2008 to develop nuance.  — S.H.  (10/1/2004)
