Clos Pegase

Clos Pegase Winery is the result of Jan Shrem’s passion for wine which was instilled by his wife Mitsuko. After selling his successful Japanese publishing company and moving to Europe with his wife in 1968, Jan decided to enroll in the enology program at the University of Bordeaux. After completion, he determined that Napa Valley would be the ideal location for his Clos Pegase Vineyards vision. To help begin his venture of producing these Clos Pegase wines he recruited Andre Tchelistcheff, one of the pioneers of Napa Valley. Jan purchased a 50-acre vineyard in Calistoga in 1983 and later added more than 400 additional acres in the Napa Valley according to our Clos Pegase wine reviews. Jan’s goal was to establish a winery that would combine wine and art which he accomplished with the completion of his post-modern temple in 1987. While Clos Pegase uses mostly traditional varieties for their wines, it is their Hommage Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay that are typically found atop our Clos Pegase wine ratings. To see which of these wines is best suited for you check out our Clos Pegase wine buying guide below.

Clos Pegase 2002 Graveyard Hill Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon (Carneros)

  1. $60
This shows crisp acids and fine balance. It’s huge in blackberry and cherry fruit, but has the structural integrity and finesse that, quite simply, make it a very great Cabernet Sauvignon. Drink now–2015.  — S.H.  (5/1/2007)

Clos Pegase 1999 Hommage Artist Series Reserve Mitsuko's Chardonnay (Carneros)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $36
Possibly the longest name of a Chardonnay in California, and an extraordinary one at that. There is tremendous winemaker influence in the massive oak and lees, but the fruit is huge, an atomic blast of peaches and mangoes. Feels rich, weighty and sensual on the palate. The long finish smacks of vanilla and cinnamon.  — S.H.  (12/15/2002)

Clos Pegase 1999 Mitsuko’s Vineyard Merlot (Carneros)

  1. $25
A first-rate wine, totally flattering in the mouth, and addictively delicious. It’s not big, but restrained and stylish, reining in the blackberry fruit to match a rich overlay of oak. The texture is a marvel, smooth and complex, all the way through the long, distinguished finish.  — S.H.  (11/15/2002)

Clos Pegase 2001 Palisades Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $60
The vineyard is in Calistoga. The wine, 100% varietal, has lots of new French oak. Seriously good, it shows all the hallmarks of a flashy, important Napa Cab, with rich, perfectly sculpted tannins, a deeply impressive structure, and intense, long-lasting black currant, spice and toasty oak flavors. Just terrific now, and should hold and soften through 2012, at least.  — S.H.  (12/15/2006)

Clos Pegase 2002 Palisades Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley)

One of the later-released Cabs from the excellent ’02 vintage, this 100% Cabernet bottling, which comes from the winery’s vineyard near Calistoga, is ultraripe, yet firm and balanced. It’s showing beautifully now, with its wealth of blackberry, cherry, mushu sauce and cocoa flavors, but has the inherent balance for moderate, and possibly longterm, aging.  — S.H.  (5/1/2007)

Clos Pegase 2005 Hommage Mitsuko’s Vineyard Chardonnay (Carneros)

  1. $40
Superripe in fruit and superoaky, this is a big, lush, powerful Chardonnay, but for all the size, it maintains balance and elegance. Potent in smoky, vanilla-accented pineapple brûlée, exotic date and stony mineral flavors, it shows the crisp acidity the vineyard is known for, and finishes dry and spicy.  — S.H.  (4/1/2008)

Clos Pegase 2010 Mitsuko’s Vineyard Chardonnay (Carneros)

  1. $28
Enormously ripe and rich—this is honeyed, with citrus and tropical fruit flavors. It’s creamy, too, with a butterscotch accent. The magic comes on the finish with a swirl of acidity and dry mineral. Decadent but never cloying, this defines the ripe California style.  — S.H.  (9/1/2012)

Clos Pegase 1999 Graveyard Hill Cabernet Sauvignon (Carneros)

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $60
Despite the gloomy name, this is a young and vibrant wine, full of life and future. The cassis flavors are generously wrapped in thick tannins, demanding cellaring. Far too young to drink now, put it away until 2006 and try again. —S.H.  — S.H.  (5/1/2003)
