Colgin 2003 IX Estate Red Wine (Napa Valley)
-
$175
From the winery’s estate vineyard, high up on Pritchard Hill above the Silverado Trail, comes this spectacular Cab-based masterpiece. The color is purple-black, and massively saturated. Very intricate, complex, totally enjoyable, almost perfect. Like a great Pauillac, this monumental wine announces cassis, blackberry, cigar box, pencil lead, spice and cedar flavors…

Colgin 2005 IX Estate Red Wine (Napa Valley)
-
$275
This Bordeaux blend is similar to Colgin’s Cariad bottling, but the grapes are from the winery’s estate vineyard, high up on Pritchard Hill, ranging in elevation from 1,100–1,300 feet. A distinct note of violets and Provençal herbs erupts from the glass, supported by fruiter ones of cherries, red and black currants, dark chocolate, caramelized oak and cedar. What…

Colgin 1999 Herb Lamb Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley)
-
$150
Aromas lean toward black cherry, chocolate and herbs, which sally forth on the palate serving up more dense fruit, licorice, coffee and beautiful toast flavors. Tannins are smooth, supple and ripe. Long, lush and decadent on the finish.

Colgin 2003 Herb Lamb Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley)
-
$225
Almost black in color. Flavors are of blackberry, cassis, Provençal herbs; the 100% new oak adds rich toast and char notes. Tannins are brilliant, dense and fluffy. Grown at the base of Howell Mountain, this is classic mountain Cab, beautiful now, fleshy and fat, but with a 20-year lifespan.

Colgin 2005 Cariad Red (Napa County)
Cariad is an interesting Bordeaux blend, the ’05 consisting of Cab Sauvignon, Merlot, Cab Franc and Petit Verdot. It feels a little tentative now, as if the components are still learning how to mesh. There’s a shy, tannic quality to the cherry, currant, chocolate and plum flavors, and a glyceriney mouthfeel that makes the wine slippery smooth. Give it a few years…

Colgin 2005 Tychson Hill Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley)
The price hasn’t been set yet on this wine, which will be released in November, but the ’04 was $275. This 100% Cabernet is stunning, a quintessential hillside Cab that’s powerful and compelling in blackberries, red and black currants, cola, spices and cedar. It feels ultra-refined in the mouth, with slightly tough tannins and a trace of acidity giving a sturdy…

Colgin 2003 Cariad Red (Napa Valley)
-
$225
A Bordeaux blend based on Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, the grapes for this stunning wine came from David Abreu’s vineyard in the St. Helena foothills. It’s very complex, softer, more open and approachable than Colgin’s 100% Cabs, with a flamboyant spectrum of cherries, framboise, cocoa, violets, gingerbread and spices framed in supple, fine tannins. Beautiful, a…

Colgin 2006 IX Estate Red (Napa Valley)
-
$290
From the estate, in the Pritchard Hill area of St. Helena which is worthy of its own appellation, comes this densely structured, impressive but young wine. It’s massive in fruity extract and new oak, flooding the mouth with soft, ultrarich flavors of blackberries and dark chocolate and a leathery, peppery, grilled meat quality. This is the kind of wine even a…
