Coto de Imaz 1996 Selección Pedro Guasch Reserva Red (Rioja)
-
$45
Densely oaked, but over good fruit, this delivers fine flavor and feel. A solid, dark cherry core, very good fruit-to-acid balance and solid tannins create a handsome package. In the classic Rioja sense, it has substance, but is not fat or weighty. Tasty now, even better in two years, this will keep until 2010+. Cellar Selection. —M.M.

Coto de Imaz 1994 Gran Reserva Tempranillo (Rioja)
-
$29
This lighter-styled, mature Rioja shows just a hint of brown at the edges. An initial light sweaty note blows off quickly, revealing appealing dried cherry, spice and wood aromas and flavors, and an elegant, balanced mouthfeel. Tannins are mostly resolved, drink now–2005. —M.M.
