Covey Run

Located within the appellations of the Yakima and Columbia Valley, Covey Run Winery has been producing value wine since 1982. Covey Run Vineyards are protected by the Cascade Mountain Range which provides a high altitude desert climate where grapes can fully ripen. Covey Run’s main vineyard for their red varietal plantings is Alder Ridge while the Oasis Vineyard is home to the majority of Covey Run’s white wines, specifically Chardonnay and Riesling. While the majority of Covey Run wines are made from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Chardonnay, Riesling, Gewurztraminer, Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc, they are also experimenting with newer plantings of Viognier, Barbera, Zinfandel, Mourvedre and Roussanne. The Covey Run Quail Series offers an affordable option for consumers while their Columbia Valley Reserve line tends to receive higher accolades and carry a bit of a higher price tag according to our Covey Run ratings. Covey Run 1997 Fumé Blanc

Once again this winery scores with a flavor-packed, fun wine that could only be made in Washington. Mounds and mounds of zingy fruit distinguish this wine from other Sauvignon Blancs from around the world, which are often grassy and lean. Covey Run 1998 Ice Wine Riesling (Yakima Valley)

Yum. I didn’t know whether to start or finish with this word. The unctuous apricot and peach flavors touched by a spicy botrytis nose make the rich, oily mouthfeel an enjoyable experience. The acids clean up the heavy sugars as the wine closes. This wine is picked and pressed frozen to concentrate the sugars and flavors. Yum. — W.E. (5/1/2002)

The Syrah grape seems to be finding a niche in Washington. The hot days and cool nights emulate those of the Rhône Valley, retaining acids in the grapes. Plums, currants and fresh-vegetable aromas lead into a mouthful of fleshy dark fruits, leather and a slight gamy quality.
