Soft and lightly cedary on the nose, with earthy berry fruit aromas. The palate shows good acidity and balance, with ripe cherry, raspberry and cassis flavors. Smooth on the finish, and overall there aren’t any breaks in the fabric.

Cruz Alta 2006 Grand Reserve Malbec (Mendoza)

A blend of charred oak and violets lead the bouquet, which also offers some floral berry. The palate is lifted, medium-weight and juicy, with boysenberry and cherry flavors. Very nice if you like a floral Malbec with bright berry fruit as opposed to something dark, meaty and oaky.

Warm and a touch sweet smelling, with dried spices, brown sugar and roasted plum on the nose. The palate is chunky, a touch viscous and slightly woody, but it also brings full plum and berry flavors along with peppery spice. Finishes with solid cherry at the core and then more spice and pepper.

Cruz Alta 2006 Chairman's Blend Red (Mendoza)

A bit grapey and jammy on the nose, with a slight hint of bramble and stem. It’s solid in the mouth, with kick and sweet berry fruit flavors. On the finish it falls off some, leaving a mildly candied aftertaste. Not perfect but overall it’s a well-made blend of 85% Malbec with Cab and Syrah filling things out.

Aromas of violets, blackberry and black currant jam are solid, while the palate shows sharper acidity than most Bonardas, and thus a juicy sensation along with flavors of snappy black cherry and boysenberry. Fresh and forward, with a lot of fruit and potency.

Standard all the way, but isn’t that what we want from a $9 wine? The nose offers raspberry and strawberry aromas, while the flavors are generic but familiar, with a lean toward cherry and berry. Solid on the finish, and fairly intense as a whole. Imported by Clock Tower Imports.

Not short on intensity but it is a little candied and gummy on the nose. It remains somewhat jammy in the mouth, with a mild creaminess softening up edgy red berry flavors. Good but candied and basic.

Cruz Alta 2009 Grand Reserve Bonarda (Mendoza)

Perfumed, floral aromas lead to a juicy, slightly lean palate with berry and plum flavors. Plump and sturdy, with lifting acids and a secure body. Nothing spectacular but at least it’s not heavy and grinding like Bonarda can be.
