Crystal Valley Cellars 2000 Cabernet Sauvignon (Yountville)

  1. $16
Has a lot in common with far more expensive Cabernets. The dark color promises a richness that’s confirmed with a sniff revealing ripe cassis fruit and smoky oak. In the mouth, it’s quintessentially fine California Cabernet, rich and dry, balanced and delicious. Lacks the extra dimensions of the best stuff, but not by much. Impressive, and a great value. —S.H.  — S.H.  (12/31/2002)

Crystal Valley Cellars 2000 Syrah (California)

  1. $16
There’s a ton of varietal character in this fnely crafted wine, from the pepper and plum flavors to the rich, full-bodied texture. It’s big and dense but never loses sight of elegance and finesse. The velvety texture is a delight. Great value compared to some of these superpremium prices.  — S.H.  (12/1/2002)

Crystal Valley Cellars 2000 Reserve Merlot (California)

  1. $16
There’s lots of elegance to this ripe, fruity wine. The plum and blackberry flavors are nicely offset by rich, soft tannins and a kiss of oak. Balanced and harmonious, this Merlot is easily as good as many costing far more.  — S.H.  (11/15/2002)

Crystal Valley Cellars 2003 Merlot (California)

  1. $18
Here’s a good, veryday Merlot, with some complexity. It’s dry and balanced, with a good array of black cherry, blackberry and toasty oak flavors. Has the flash of a very fine wine, without quite the depth, but the price is fair.  — S.H.  (3/1/2006)

Crystal Valley Cellars 2002 Reserve Merlot (California)

  1. $16
Plenty of jammy black cherry fruit here, really easy to drink and to like for its soft texture. Wears a light jacket of oak that adds seasoning.  — S.H.  (10/1/2005)
