Cuillin Hills 2006 Weinbau Vineyard Reserve Cabernet Franc (Columbia Valley (WA))
-
$38
Cabernet Franc ripens nicely in Washington, and has built a bit of a cult following, as it is usually available in tiny quantities from tiny boutiques such as Cuillin Hills. This is a solid effort, loaded with tangy boysenberry and plum-flavored fruit. It’s ripe, clean and fruit-driven, and the oak (25% new) lightly handled, adding whiffs of toast and coffee.

Cuillin Hills 2005 The Dungeon Syrah (Washington)

This is smooth and full, and has got the requisite black cherry fruit, some lemon rind and pineapple peeking through the acids. In the finish are suggestions, just a lick, of tobacco, wild cherry, maybe sweet ham. Gets interesting in the end, though it remains very tart and acidic.

Cuillin Hills 2005 Claret Red (Columbia Valley (WA))

$23
This new winery does some very cool labels, but the wine—50% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Cabernet Franc—hasn’t quite come together. The fruit is ok, with some lightly volatile lift and chocolate notes from the barrel. The wine is smooth enough, but the fruit component does not have the cut, the texture or the weight to keep it interesting.
