Damian Rae 2009 White Hawk Vineyard Syrah (Santa Barbara County)

A very good Syrah, easily the winery’s best in years. It’s most notable for the power of its flavors, offering a flood of black-pepper-infused cured meat and ripe black cherry. The richness is wrapped into firm tannins. With its long finish, this should provide pleasant drinking over the next few years.  — S.H.  (7/1/2012)

Good, but a bit tamped down and dull in character, although it’s very dry, and the tannins are nice and smooth. Not much going on flavor-wise except for modest blackberry and spice flavors. Drink now.  — S.H.  (2/1/2011)

Damian Rae 2006 White Hawk Vineyard Syrah (Santa Barbara County)

Many wineries dip into this vineyard, with varying results. Damian Rae’s ’06 is a near copy of their ’05, a somewhat rustic wine, with hard tannins and some raisiny notes to the currant and anise flavors.  — S.H.  (12/15/2008)
