Dao Sul

Since its inception in 1989, the mission of Dao Sul Wines has been to promote the Dão wines both nationally and internationally. With almost a dozen different wine producing estates and even more Dao Sul Vineyards throughout Portugal, Dao Sul has become one of the most dynamic wine producers in the region. While Dao Sul originated in the Dao area, (where most of the operations are still based) they now produce wines from Alentejo, Bairrada, Estremadura and Douro according to our Dao Sul wine reviews. With a focus on indigenous Portuguese grape varieties, Dao Sul encompasses small boutique wineries as well as large scale production of high quality commercial wines. Their latest endeavor is a state of the art Dao Sul Winery including a fine dining restaurant in the heart of the Bairrada. While their entry level value wines are distributed and recognized around the globe, it is their top tier Dao and Douro red blends that tend to be held in the highest regard according to our Dao Sul wine ratings. Dao Sul 2004 Quinta das Tecedeiras Reserva Red (Douro)

  1. $29
Smoke and tobacco aromas are immediately attractive, and with the delicious, but dry structure, here is a wine that shows both great potential and great elegance. There is power, as witnessed by the alcohol, but it is relatively muted, the berry fruits showing through the tannins, and then the acidity and velvet wood flavors finishing.  — R.V.  (7/1/2008)

A beautifully perfumed expression of Touriga Nacional. There is some of the mineral grit of the Dão, but the wine is also rich, with depths of black fruit and dark, dry tannins. The wine is solid, firm, dense and powerful, a great mouthful of dark, dense flavors.  — R.V.  (4/1/2009)

Dao Sul 2008 Casa de Santar Vinha do Contador White (Dão)

Made from the vineyards of Casa de Santar, this is the result of an exercise in old-style white wine making, but without the oxidation. The wine is full, rich, maybe not as fruity as more modern-style whites, but with considerable complexity of new wood, almonds, spice and a touch of honey.  — R.V.  (8/1/2009)

Dao Sul 2007 Quinta das Tecedeiras Vintage Port (Port)

A rich, toffee-like wine, fleshy and opulent, appealing in its generosity. Only after a while do the tannins show through, and even then the full-bodied character dominates.  — R.V.  (12/15/2009)

Cabriz is the home estate of Dao Sul in the heart of the Dão region. This Reserva shows all the texture of the region’s wines, with its granite feel, its firm and dry structure and its powerful fruit. An impressive wine, for aging  — R.V.  (8/1/2011)

Dao Sul 2007 Casa de Santar Reserva Red (Dão)

  1. $35
Firm tannins give this wine great structure. In a good sense, it has an old-fashioned leathery feel to it, very firm, dry, the fruit showing richness while already pointing towards maturity.  — R.V.  (8/1/2011)

Dao Sul 2008 Quinta do Encontro Preto Branco Reserva Red (Bairrada)

White and black is the name, but that hardly does justice to this richly ripe wine that fills the glass with its heady perfumes. Tannic, yes, but also fruity, with concentrated plum fruits and a tight structure. Age for 3–4 years.  — R.V.  (8/1/2011)

Dao Sul 2009 Quinta de Cabriz Four C Red (Dão)

An intensely structured wine, very ripe but also floral, perfumed and aromatic. There is power in this smooth, creamy character, which has rich berry fruits to go with the tannins.  — R.V.  (11/1/2011)
