This is a big, barrel-aged Chardonnay resplendent in caramel and honey, although it turns a bit bi-polar on the mid-palate, where it shows off lean minerality. A yin and yang wine, with a slight burn on the finish.

Lots of briary wild blackberry, cherry and exotic spice flavors in this Zin, with cola, tobacco and mushu plum sauce complexities, and the finish is dry. Compromised by a hit of sharp acidity, but rich barbecue will help.

Too sharp and aggressive in tart acidity, which emphasizes the tannins, making it feel overly astringent. Not a bad wine, with pleasant cherry and blackberry flavors, but it sure is tough in the mouth.

Dry, sharp and gritty, lacking smoothness and balance in the mouth. Give it a richer texture, and the blackberry and currant flavors would be just fine, even ageable.

There’s a good wine in here somewhere, with the fine dusty tannins and underlying flavors of plum and blackberry, but the wine is marred by a musty aroma that carries through a taste of mushrooms sauteed in soy sauce.

A field blend from the DeMayo Vineyard, believed to be mostly Zin and Petite Sirah. The resulting wine doesn’t show much of its provenance or history, just a smidgen of spice but only fruit and modest of flavor.

Not as good as Darcie Kent’s Crown Block Merlot, this one is smooth, with big-shouldered tannins. It tastes of raisin toast, dried plums and tobacco, with menthol darting in and out along the edges.
