Darien 2003 Seleccion Red (Rioja)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $40
Score Chasers: Spain 2011
Leafy, rooty aromas fold in earthy berry scents and chocolate. Mature on the palate, with baked plum, sweet spice and tobacco flavors. Ripe, long and friendly on the finish, with more than adequate structure and tightness. Contains one-third Mazuelo in addition to Tempranillo, which is a lot by Rioja standards. Drink now.  — M.S.  (12/15/2011)

Darien 2001 Selección Red (Rioja)

  1. $36
A mix of four grapes, headed by Tempranillo and Garnacha, this is a good, hefty blend. Plenty of red fruit and toast on the nose, with lots of color and zest. Meaty and full of new oak, with plum and berry fruit backing things up. Smooth on finish. Quite nice.  — M.S.  (9/1/2004)

Darien 2002 Reserva Red (Rioja)

  1. $25
A saturated wine with some lemony oak aromas accenting deep berry notes. The palate is juicy, tannic and big, with full-sized raspberry and plum flavors. Definitely it pushes things up a notch, and the end result is a brawny, solid wine with good balance despite a few rough edges. Drink now through 2009.  — M.S.  (6/1/2008)

Darien 2005 Crianza Tempranillo (Rioja)

  1. $18
Despite some spearmint and Band-Aid on the nose, this ready-to-drink wine shows good quality from head to toe. The palate is on the lighter side, with nice acidity pushing smacky, lively red plum and raspberry flavors. Hints of tomato and citrus fruits also get into play.  — M.S.  (4/1/2010)

Darien 2002 Seleccion Red (Rioja)

  1. $30
Hints of brett and cowhide give this Tempranillo-led blend a more rustic outlook, but the palate is pure and fruity as it emphasizes expressive berry flavors. The mouthfeel is more than acceptable and the finish of spice, raspberry and medium-weight tannins does the trick. Drink now through 2010.  — M.S.  (6/1/2008)

Darien 2006 Reserva Red (Rioja)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $26
Year in and year out this is the score this wine deserves. This vintage is meaty, with dark fruit, bacon and rubbery aromas. It’s a touch hard and tannic, with ripe tomato, berry and cherry flavors. Bright, forward and tannic; should age fairly well.  — M.S.  (12/15/2011)

Darien 2000 Reserva Red (Rioja)

  1. $28
Starts shy, but then reveals a smoky nose of dried cherries and freshly fallen leaves. Still fairly youthful on the palate, where plum and cherry flavors are braced by a ripping note of hickory smoke. Barrel notes take over on the finish, but overall it has a lot of what you want from a 21st-century Rioja.  — M.S.  (6/1/2005)

Darien 2001 Reserve Red (Rioja)

  1. $28
Light raspberry along with charred wood carries the modest nose. Additional raspberry flavors blend with sweeter strawberry tastes to create a mildly creamy, easygoing palate. Finishes fairly buttery, with toast and popcorn notes. An attempt at a major-league wine that is semi-successful.  — M.S.  (11/1/2006)
