De Martino 2005 Single Vineyard Carmenère (Maipo Valley)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $25
Everything about this select-level Carmenère is impressive. It’s colorful and wrapped in a cloak of classy oak. The palate is juicy and balanced to a tee, with dark berry flavors busting free. A little young oak emerges on the finish, but it vanishes in short order once you air things out. A wonderful red wine regardless of variety. 300 cases made.  — M.S.  (5/1/2007)

De Martino 2005 Organic Cabernet Sauvignon (Maipo Valley)

  • Best Buy
  1. $15
Potent, granular aromas of berries and earth precede a juicy, condensed palate that is overflowing with ripe, robust blackberry and cassis flavors. This is a rich, silky wine with touches of tobacco and espresso on the finish. It shows all the characteristics of a fine Chilean Cabernet.  — M.S.  (3/1/2007)

De Martino 2009 Alto de Piedras Single Vineyard Carmenère (Maipo Valley)

  1. $45
Score Chasers: South America 2011
A big, earthy type of wine with a ton of ripeness and heft. Smells like pure black olive, earth and smoked meat. The palate is tight but friendly as it delivers big doses of herb, tea, chocolate and black fruit flavors. About as deep and long in the mouth as this variety gets; proof that Maipo can produce the occasional excellent Carmenère.  — M.S.  (6/1/2011)

De Martino 2000 Estate Bottled - Prima Reserva Merlot (Maipo Valley)

  • Best Buy
  1. $13
What a nice surprise. This full-bodied Merlot is of amazing quality. The dense aromas of coffee, _mocha, earth and spice are unassailable. And the flavors are equally dynamite, with all the concentrated plum and blackberry on display. The finish is smoky, with obvious but welcome wood tones. As the saying goes, try it; you’ll like it.  — M.S.  (12/1/2002)

De Martino 2008 Legado Reserva Chardonnay (Limarí Valley)

  • Best Buy
  1. $15
Composed and showing no overwrought oak or tropical fruit aromas that so often plague Chilean Chardonnay. A smooth operator, with toasty apple and mineral aromas leading to a ripe but cleansing palate and finish. This is like winemaker Marcelo Retamal’s favorite child; with proper guidance it is growing better every year. Best overall Chardonnay to date from Limarí.  — M.S.  (3/1/2010)

De Martino 2006 El León Single Vineyard Carignan (Maule Valley)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $30
From 70-year-old bush vines, this is excellent Maule Carignan. It has a brightness of fruit that puts the spotlight on cherry and raspberry, and while the color is a brilliant ruby it isn’t overly dense, deep or heavy. There’s a lightness of being to it, but also structure and acidity. Ageable for up to 5–8 years.  — M.S.  (12/1/2009)

De Martino 2005 Legado Reserva Syrah (Choapa Valley)

  1. $15
A rock-solid Syrah with mild touches of dry leaves, herbs and pepper accenting bold red-berry flavors. It’s juicy and forward, with big tannins and ample oak bringing it to a loud crescendo. Strong-boned and ripe, this will go with almost any kind of red-friendly food—from pizza and burgers to steak and lasagna.  — M.S.  (3/1/2008)

De Martino 1999 Prima Reserva Carmenère (Maipo Valley)

  • Best Buy
  1. $12
The nose is rustic, with horse hide, bramble bush and spicy, subdued black fruit. The palate is round and rich, with pure and ripe berry fruit along with some supporting oak. The finish is equally nice, with notes of licorice, coffee and spices.  — M.S.  (7/1/2003)
