de Trafford 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon (Stellenbosch)

  • Online Exclusive
David De Trafford's Cabernet is a very elegant affair. Its tannins, its blackcurrant fruits and its only just herbaceous flavors are all cool, very straight. But it's also a wine that shows how good Stellenbosch Cabernets can be - an amalgam of power and style, of richness and structure. Enjoy, but age over 3-4 years.  — R.V.  (12/22/2011)

de Trafford 2004 Perspective Red (Stellenbosch)

  • Online Exclusive
A selection of barrels for submission to the Cape Winemakers' Guild, of which David de Trafford is a member. This blend is ripe, impressively complex in its intense dark fruit, and spice. The colors are dark and as concentrated as the wood-laden black tarry fruits. It comes from the high, 900 feet, vineyards owned by De Trafford on the slopes of the Helderberg mountain.  — R.V.  (12/22/2011)

de Trafford 2004 Chenin Blanc (Stellenbosch)

  1. $25
A wood-aged style that works, and works well. Balanced with its touch of spice and some vanilla flavors from the American wood, there is fresh fruit, delicious acidity and flavors of apples. De Trafford is a top quality, small-scale producer, high up in the mountains above Stellenbosch. Imported by Boutique Wine Collection.  — R.V.  (11/15/2005)

de Trafford 2001 Straw Wine Chenin Blanc (Helderberg)

  1. $25
This wine is a seamless mélange of apricot nectar, honey, dried pineapple, golden raisin and orange zest. It is a sweet, fruity, not-too-viscous wine made, per the label, “from naturally dried grapes.” Well balanced throughout, and not too deep.  — K.F.  (12/1/2003)

de Trafford 2000 Shiraz (Helderberg)

  1. $40
This is a very lovely choice for an evening in with its sweet plum, pepper and blackberry flavors couched in smooth, powdery tannins. A thin vein of eucalyptus and a bit of acidity complements the peppercorn finish. This is sure to please each time it is uncorked.  — K.F.  (8/1/2003)

de Trafford 1999 Reserve Red (Helderberg)

  1. $35
This red blend shows its 51% Cabernet roots with strong red cherry and ripe plum fruit. Throughout, the notes of vanilla, cinnamon toast, and cream vie for attention over the likeable fruit. The snug, particulate tannins and alcohol heat make for a mouthfilling experience.  — K.F.  (8/1/2003)

de Trafford 2001 Pinot Noir (Helderberg)

  1. $40
The edgy, attention-getting note of funky earth holds on through shades of cherry, cocoa and white pepper. The well-balanced acids and tannins make the fruit attractive.  — K.F.  (9/1/2003)

de Trafford 2002 Chenin Blanc (Helderberg)

  1. $17
Aromas of dusty citrus, pear, cilantro and spice meet similar flavors on the palate, plus a bit of green apple. Finishes with herbs, pepper and citrus. This is well-balanced and very fresh. —K.F.  — K.F.  (4/1/2003)
