Deerfield Ranch 2000 Ladi's Vineyard Syrah (Sonoma County)
-
$40
Must be unfined or unfiltered, because it’s already throwing a heavy sediment. Inky black. Intense, bold aromas of crushed white pepper suggest Northern Rhône Syrah. Deep, concentrated flavors of blackberries and violets, lush, complex tannins, fabulous structure and mouthfeel. You might mistake this for a fine young Hermitage—it’s that good. —S.H.

Deerfield Ranch 2005 Buchignani Garcia Vineyard Old Vine Zinfandel (Dry Creek Valley)
-
$55
Not many people cellar Zinfandel but this is one you might want to for a few years. It’s very dry and tannic and extraordinarily dense, with a complex spectrum of red and black currant, pomegranate, molasses cookie, baked cherry pie, root beer, cocoa and peppery spice flavors that go on and on. Deerfield Ranch 2001 Buchignani Vineyard Old Vine Zinfandel (Dry Creek Valley)

What a great Zin. Amazing how these old vines produce such intensity of flavor and perfect tannins. Blackberries, cherries, blueberries, mocha, pecan pie and a splash of sweet Tawny, yet not a trace of residual sugar. It all comes at the cost of high alcohol, however.

Deerfield Ranch 1999 Gold Orion Vineyard Late Harvest Botrytis Riesling (Napa Valley)
-
$50
This deeply colored, golden wine is very sweet and hyperbotrytized, with apricot, Grand Marnier and honey flavors, and the smoothest texture imaginable. It just glides over the tongue and down the throat with a viscous purity. It wants higher acidity, but that’s quibbling—it’s delicious. —S.H.

Deerfield Ranch 2000 Old Vine Buchignani Vineyard Zinfandel (Dry Creek Valley)

$40
What a terrific Zin, one able to stand beside many a Cabernet or Merlot in terms of richness and tableside elegance. Brimming with blackberry, tobacco, pepper and herb flavors wrapped in soft, luscious tannins, and bone dry. The alcohol is a whopping 16.4%, but it’s balanced.

Deerfield Ranch 2001 Ladi's Vineyard Syrah (Sonoma County)

Take a sip and you get hit broadside by a hugely flavorful, delicious wine. The plum, blackberry and chocolate flavors are ripe and sweet, the tannins rich and soft, and the acids are refreshing. This opulent wine is great on its own, but try with roast leg of lamb studded with plenty of garlic.
