Must be unfined or unfiltered, because it’s already throwing a heavy sediment. Inky black. Intense, bold aromas of crushed white pepper suggest Northern Rhône Syrah. Not many people cellar Zinfandel but this is one you might want to for a few years. It’s very dry and tannic and extraordinarily dense, with a complex spectrum of red and black currant, pomegranate, molasses cookie, baked cherry pie, root beer, cocoa and peppery spice flavors that go on and on. This deeply colored, golden wine is very sweet and hyperbotrytized, with apricot, Grand Marnier and honey flavors, and the smoothest texture imaginable. Deerfield Ranch 1999 Old Vine Buchignani Vineyard Zinfandel (Sonoma County)

From 50-year-old vines in an appellation that deserves its reputation as Zin country. The wine has the weight, body and concentration of good Cabernet Sauvignon with a plush mouthfeel and overlay of fine oak. But there’s no mistaking the variety: brambly fruit, pepper and jam, and spices aplenty cry “Zinfandel” all the way. (11/1/2002)

Barrel fermentation yields creamy, smoky aromas and a rich texture. Lees aging boosts the thick mouthfeel. On the other hand, the actual fruit flavors are restrained. No massive guavas and breadfruit here. Think apples, crisp and clean and spicy. This is likely to age well. —S.H. — S.H. (9/1/2002)

Take a sip and you get hit broadside by a hugely flavorful, delicious wine. The plum, blackberry and chocolate flavors are ripe and sweet, the tannins rich and soft, and the acids are refreshing.
