Delicato 2002 Shiraz (California)

  • Best Buy
  1. $6
The grapes for this impressive Aussie-style Shiraz, from Lodi and Clarksburg, are ripe; the palate boasts has rich flavors of cherries, black raspberries, blueberries and plums. Feels succulent, with a smooth texture and a long, sweetish finish, but it’s perfectly dry. At this price, you can’t go wrong.  — S.H.  (11/15/2003)

Delicato 1998 Monterey Vine Select San Bernbe Vineyard Syrah (Monterey)

  1. $40
Blackberry aromas with leather and a slight cool note open this solid Syrah. Rich, dark berry, chocolate and licorice flavors, and a dense texture. Not overextracted or overripe, the wine has an appealing finish, echoing the flavors on the palate.  — W.E.  (9/1/2000)

Delicato 1998 Monterey Vine Select San Bernabe Vineyard Chardonnay (Monterey)

  1. $35
Very rich, with pineapple fruit and smoky, toasty oak aromas opening to a full palate of apple-pear, butterscotch and hazelnut flavors. Has an attractive, creamy mouthfeel, with a long, fairly complex popcorn, lemon and butterscotch finish. A promising first effort that shows decent stuffing and some handsome shadings.  — W.E.  (9/1/2000)

Top 100 Best Buys 2011
Made in an appealingly dry, tartly crisp style, this is a fine cocktail sipper to drink with appetizers. It impresses for its rich citrus fruit, lemongrass, mineral and papaya flavors, and as dry as they are, the finish is honeyed. Production was 21,000 cases.  — S.H.  (12/1/2010)

Delicato 1998 Monterey Vine Select San Bernabe Vineyard Merlot (Monterey)

  1. $40
Plummy, oaky and mildly herbaceous in a tomato-like manner, this Merlot has good texture and full plum, earth and cocoa flavors. With its 15% alcohol it runs a bit hot, but it has decent acidity and a full finish with broad, mouth-coating tannins. Almost over the top, but hangs on.  — W.E.  (9/1/2000)

Delicato 2001 Vine Select Monte Rosso Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon (Sonoma County)

  1. $70
A step outside the company’s comfort zone, and it shows. While this is better than much of what Delicato sells, it’s not that much better to warrant the extra price. A hint of shoe polish mars the cassis-scented nose, while the palate delivers standard chocolate and black currant flavors and a lean, sculpted mouthfeel. This limited-production bottling is available…  — W.E.  (8/1/2006)

Delicato 2000 Syrah (California)

  1. $8
The family name is Indelicato, the wine is called Delicato and the juice is certainly delicious, if not necessarily delicate.. Big-time growers, they won Monterey's San Barnabe Vineyard-the world's largest continuous vineyard. Grape suppliers to many California brands, they are well-equipped to deliver value, as in this creamy flavorful Syrah. This star quaffer…  — W.E.  (10/1/2001)
