Descendientes de J. Palacios 2004 Villa de Corullon Mencía (Bierzo)
Editors' Choice
Price
$50
This is about as aromatically complex as Bierzo gets. It shows radical minerality, bright berry fruit, purity and passion. The palate is a fast and exciting ride highlighted by excellent acidity, kick and ripe but restrained flavors. Corullon gets better and better with each passing vintage.

Descendientes de J. Palacios 2006 Villa de Corullon Mencía (Bierzo)

Price
$45
A high level of purity from the start. The bouquet attracts with strong scents of mineral, flowers, wild herbs, berry fruit and toast. There’s no shortage of bracing acidity, so the body weight and balance are just right. One of Spain’s most food-friendly, elegant wines, and not run of the mill. The best expression of Mencia on the market today.

Descendientes de J. Palacios 2001 Corullón Villa Mencía (Bierzo)
Price
$40
This rather unique wine (made from Mencía) is at the vanguard of the Bierzo revival. It’s earthy and leafy, with aromas of red plums and natural spice. The mouthfeel is perfect, as it’s just lush and firm enough. Nearly explodes in the mouth, with fine French oak softening the blow.

Descendientes de J. Palacios 2006 Petalos Mencía (Bierzo)
Price
$22
This is Descendientes’ so-called starter Bierzo, but it rises above the tried and true value zone to exhibit mineral, crushed violet petals, graham cracker and pure dark-fruit aromas. The palate is smooth and plush, with lush black-fruit flavors, easygoing tannins and some creamy length. It’s not as vivid as the 2005, but it’s still mighty impressive.
