Dessilani 2000 Riserva Nebbiolo (Gattinara)

  • Editors' Choice
  • Online Exclusive
  1. $55
An exceptional example of an underappreciated appellation, this Gattinara offers up a gorgeous nose of animal, leather and spice accented by high floral tones. The palate has mature tannins and a complex tangle of flavors ranging from charcoal-grilled meat to earth and mushrooms. A nice kick of acidity on the finish means it can stand up to even the heaviest duck dishes.  — W.E.  (2/1/2010)

Dessilani 2004 Nebbiolo (Gattinara)

  1. $60
Here’s an earthy expression of Nebbiolo with inviting aromas of black fruit, leather and spice. You’ll also get a slight hint of red beets and wild mushroom but the wine keeps all these diverse sensations in tight check. Firm tannins and good density mark the close.  — M.L.  (4/1/2010)

Dessilani 2004 Red (Ghemme)

  1. $52
This is a genuine and straightforward red wine from Piedmont that would pair with oven-roasted pasta or meat loaf. The wine (made from Nebbiolo and 20% Vespolina) is lean and fresh in the mouth, but ends with a very focused blast of almond and marzipan like flavors.  — M.L.  (4/1/2010)

This is a pleasant red wine from Piedmont in northern Italy made with Nebbiolo and Vespolina grapes for a clean delivery of berry, spice and cola aromas. The wine is tonic and fresh in the mouth with clean acidity and playful bite of exotic spice on the close.  — M.L.  (4/1/2010)

Dessilani 1997 Reserve Selection Barbera (Barbera di Piemonte)

  1. $16
Muted and slightly musty, there’s a funk to this one that later turns to minty cherries. Cherry and chocolate at the core, and a cool earthiness to the finish. Resembles Burgundian Pinot Noir in its aromas and earth components.  — W.E.  (4/1/2000)

Dessilani 2005 Spanna Nebbiolo (Colline Novaresi)

Some toasted notes of smoke and campfire emerge at the tail end of forest berries and blackberries. The wine is tonic and tight in the mouth with crisp acidity and a pleasantly easy feel overall. Nebbiolo grapes are called Spanna in the Colline Novaresi appellation.  — M.L.  (4/1/2010)

Elegant and straightforward, this Spanna opens with damp earth and some lifted flowery notes. Mouthcoating tannins frame cherry and rose petal flavors which persist on the medium finish. Drink now to 2011.  — W.E.  (2/1/2010)
