Devil's Lair 2003 Red Wine (Margaret River)

  1. $23
A surprisingly strong effort from a Foster’s label that’s languished a bit in recent years, this is an intense, moderately ageworthy red that’s two-thirds Cabernet Sauvignon, the rest is a blend of Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Scents of dark chocolate and mint add cassis, finishing with firm dusty-textured tannins. Drink 2008–2015.  — J.C.  (6/1/2007)

Devil's Lair 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon-Merlot (Margaret River)

  1. $23
Very enjoyable flavors—plum, black cherry and a fresh herb note that adds some crispness. Feel is flat and even, rather than multidimensional. Imported by Foster’s Wine Estates Americas.  — D.T.  (6/1/2006)

Devil's Lair 2001 Fifth Leg Red (Margaret River)

  1. $12
It’s not a big-boned wine, but its powdery tannins give it texture to spare. Mixed plums and cherries are out in full force on the palate. A blend of Cabernet, Shiraz, Merlot and Cabernet Franc.  — D.T.  (10/1/2003)

Devil's Lair 1999 Fifth Leg White (Margaret River)

This wine’s not going to knock you out with bright, overpowering fruit, but that’s what I like about it. It has yellow stone fruit and olive-oil notes on the palate, plus a nice minerally component. Smooth and viscous in the mouth; a blend of 54% Sémillon, 36% Sauvignon Blanc and 10% Chardonnay.  — D.T.  (10/1/2003)

Devil's Lair 2001 Red (Margaret River)

  1. $23
The best feature of this Bordeaux blend (nearly three-quarters Cabernet Sauvignon) is its cottony, furry tannins. Tobacco, wheat toast and nutmeg flavors and aromas are compelling if fading a little already, but they also cover up the wine’s tart, plummy core. An Old World-styled wine, not a bruising fruit bomb. Imported by Southcorp Wines.  — D.T.  (10/1/2005)

Devil's Lair 2004 Red Wine (Margaret River)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $25
Scents of leather, cola and brown sugar give way to cleaner, fruitier notes of blackberry on the palate, marked by ample vanilla oak. A blend of 78% Cab Sauvignon, 19% Merlot and 3% Cab Franc, it’s medium-bodied and fresh, with a slightly minty finish framed by soft tannins.  — J.C.  (2/1/2008)

Devil's Lair 2002 Chardonnay (Margaret River)

  1. $23
This balanced Chard has fresh stone fruit, vanilla and pineapple flavors, and light talc, citrus and floral aromas. Seems to unfold on the finish—it’s fatter and rounder on the back half than it is on the front. Straightforward and satisfying.  — W.E.  (7/1/2004)

Devil's Lair 2004 Fifth Leg Red (Western Australia)

  1. $12
A Bordeaux blend (plus 28% Shiraz, that is) with pretty blackberry and blueberry fruit flavors. Has earthy aromas, with an edge of Sweet Tart. Not a deep wine, but just fine for everyday consumption. Imported by Foster’s Wine Estates Americas.  — D.T.  (8/1/2006)
