DFJ Vinhos

Since its inception in 1998, DFJ Vinhos winery has reached an average annual production of six million bottles spread across its 33 brands and 77 different wines. Headman José Neiva Correia wears many hats in the company; his titles include owner, general manager, master winemaker and director of production and control of the quality. Correia has also played a monumental role in the introduction of new varieties in Portugal and the promotion of healthy agricultural practices. Correia uses over 20 different varietals to create his DFJ Vinhos wines, the majority of which are created from Portuguese grapes, such as Arinto, Baga and Tinta Franca. But the winery’s product range doesn’t just include Portuguese varieties; international grapes like Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay are also used. Most recently, the winery’s 2007 Escada Douro red blend was ranked #29 on the Wine Enthusiast Top 100 Wines of 2011. To see more rated wines from DFJ Vinhos visit our DFJ Vinhos wine ratings below.

DFJ Vinhos 2000 Grand Arte Touriga Nacional (Estremadura)

  1. $30
DFJ is a combination of the initials of the two owners—Dino Ventura and Fausto Ferraz—and those of winemaker José Neiva. The Grand’Arte range consists of single-varietal wines grown in the company’s 148-acre vineyard. This wine, with its aromas of pepper and herbs, and its powerful black cherry flavors and vanilla layers, is stunning. —R.V.  — R.V.  (12/31/2002)

The combination of blackberry fruit and firm, dark tannins has created a complex, impressive wine. This has plenty of fruit, but the main components at this stage are its weight and structure. It has considerable aging potential; keep for 3–4 years.  — R.V.  (10/1/2012)

DFJ Vinhos 2000 Grand Arte Alicante Bouschet (Estremadura)

  1. $20
In France, Alicante Bouchet is frowned upon for its poor quality. In Portugal, it is capable of making some of the country’s finest wines. This is typical, with its sweet, jelly-like aromas and ripe, dense fruit. There’s an evocative, herby, Mediterranean sunshine feel to it. —R.V.  — R.V.  (12/31/2002)
