Dobbes Family Estate 2004 Cuvée Noir Pinot Noir (Willamette Valley)

  1. $50
Joe Dobbes makes this top-tier Pinot Noir in a full-on, fleshy, ripe style. It’s lush but nicely proportioned, featuring generous, velvety fruit flavors and restrained notes of leaf, herb and root.  — P.G.  (7/1/2007)

Dobbes Family Estate 2002 Black Label Pinot Noir (Willamette Valley)

  1. $50
A big, forceful wine, which comes on strong with powerful aromas of earth, root, herb and cherry. Plenty of black cherry fruit at the core, along with spicy, resiny, pine-needle pungency. The flavors are complex, long and sustain beautifully through the finish.  — W.E.  (11/1/2004)

Dobbes Family Estate 2002 Fortmiller Vineyard Syrah (Rogue Valley)

  1. $45
Winemaker Joe Dobbes has grabbed hold of southern Oregon Syrah’s untapped potential and is clearing a path for everyone else to follow. This is exciting wine, varietal and bold, with flesh and finesse. The rough tannins are largely tamed and the fruit is ripened enough to take on a healthy dose of oak toast. Give it a couple of years to round out and it’ll be even…  — P.G.  (8/1/2005)

Dobbes Family Estate 2004 Skipper's Cuvée Pinot Noir (Rogue Valley)

  1. $28
This is one of the best Rogue Valley Pinots I’ve ever tasted. Quite lovely right from the start, with scents of spicy berries and cherries. The fruit is clearly defined, and lit up with nuances of clove, cinnamon stick and sandalwood. Smooth and creamy in the mouth, with buttered nuts, mocha and caramel as it weaves its way down the throat. Tannins are smooth and…  — P.G.  (4/1/2007)

Dobbes Family Estate 2004 Viognier (Rogue Valley)

  1. $20
Hits the nose with sharp, penetrating, spicy aromas that indicate a lively and authoritative wine. It doesn’t disappoint, delivering a flavorful mix of tropical and citrus fruits, highlighted with grapefruit peel and light herb.  — P.G.  (7/1/2007)

Dobbes Family Estate 2002 Sundown Vineyard Syrah (Rogue Valley)

  1. $48
This is a fruitier, juicier style than the Fortmiller but equally powerful and confident. Deep purple, saturated and fragrant with pepper, smoke and black cherry. It lacks just a bit of weight on the palate, but may just be young and tight. Give it a lot of breathing time.  — P.G.  (8/1/2005)

Dobbes Family Estate 2003 Fortmiller Vineyard Syrah (Rogue Valley)

  1. $45
Dark and plum-colored, with scents of roasted coffee, toast and black fruits. Blackberry and black cherry fruit is lifted by some lemony acids. The challenge for these Rogue Valley Syrahs is to flesh out the midpalate fruit and keep the tannins in check. This is a good effort, though not up to the outstanding 2002. Just 95 cases were made.  — P.G.  (9/1/2006)

Dobbes Family Estate 2004 Quailhurst Estate Pinot Noir (Willamette Valley)

  1. $65
Quailhurst is the first single vineyard bottling ever done for Dobbes, though it’s not the winery’s estate vineyard. This is dark, smoky, fragrant and immediately seductive juice. But along with the obvious power and weight comes fruit that is just a bit syrupy, and far too much of the vanilla extract flavors for my palate. Maybe the barrel influence will fade with…  — P.G.  (4/1/2007)
