Domaine Chandon

In 1973, The French Champagne house Moët & Chandon set its sights on Napa Valley and founded Domaine Chandon Winery, making it the first French-owned sparkling wine venture in the United States. However Chandon’s beginnings date back to 1690 when the father of champagne, Dom Pérignon, set out to unlock the secret of sparkling wine and ultimately discovered the traditional champagne method. Domaine Chandon Vineyards now has vines planted in several Napa Valley appellations including Los Carneros, Mt. Veeder and Yountville according to our Domaine Chandon wine reviews. Domaine Chandon wines are produced utilizing Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier, the traditional grapes used in the production of Champagne. While Domaine Chandon offers a line of value sparkling options, it is their top tier etoile sparkling wine and their still red wines that are consistently found atop our Domaine Chandon wine ratings shown below

Domaine Chandon NV étoile Brut Sparkling

  1. $35
From the pale straw color to the delicate citrus and honeyed aromas, this wine strives for elegance and finesse and largely achieves it. Light but suggesting strawberries and limes. Dry, with a rich, creamy texture. Really stands out for elegance and harmony, and finishes on a slightly bitter-almond note.  — S.H.  (12/1/2000)

Domaine Chandon NV Brut Pinot Noir (Napa-Sonoma)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $30
Just delicious, a fascinating counterpoint to the winery’s ’01 Brut Chardonnay, with which it was coreleased. Shows a beautiful Pinotesque weight, with a cherried edge to the lime and yeast flavors. With a grand cru texture, this is really one of the best Chandon bubblies of recent memory.  — S.H.  (12/1/2007)

Domaine Chandon NV Etoile Rosé Sparkling

  1. $40
Pale copper, with a nose full of berries and yeast, this is an attractive rose that turns slightly sweet on the finish. It's soft and creamy in the mouth, and should prove to be a real crowd pleaser despite it's lack of acidic cut and length.  — J.C.  (12/1/2001)

Domaine Chandon 2001 Etoile Rosé Sparkling (Mendocino-Napa-Sonoma)

  1. $34
Released at the same time as Chandon’s 2000 Etoile, this is built along the same elegant, classic lines, but it’s younger, fresher and, being a rosé, quite a bit richer in fruit. In fact, it’s extraordinarily delicious, a mélange of sorbets ranging from raspberry, cherry and peach to lime and vanilla. The finish is crisp and clean. Should hang in there through the…  — S.H.  (12/31/2006)

Domaine Chandon 2003 Ramal Road Reserve Pinot Noir (Carneros)

  1. $45
The winery’s regular Pinot, which was released at the same time, is a light, fruity wine. This one’s darker, deeper, more ominous. It’s a controlled explosion of black cherry, mocha, spice and char in the mouth, enormously attractive and sensual.  — S.H.  (12/15/2005)

Domaine Chandon NV Reserve Brut Sparkling (Napa-Sonoma)

  1. $25
Odd, but Chandon’s Reserve is rougher and more scouring in the mouth than their less expensive Brut Classic. Maybe it’s the dosage. This is drier. But it’s also not as smooth or rich. The flavors are deep and long, but the texture is like a Spanish cava, brusque and angular.  — S.H.  (12/31/2006)

Domaine Chandon 2000 Mt. Veeder Single Vineyard Blanc de Blancs Sparkling (Mount Veeder)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $45
Rich as sin, and packed with white peach and vanilla flavors, this dry wine shows the finesse, lightness and elegance of a Chardonnay-based sparkling wine. The mousse is creamy, the finish long and decadent. Will be lovely with cracked crab and sourdough bread.  — S.H.  (12/31/2005)

Domaine Chandon NV 396 Sparkling (Carneros)

  • Best Buy
  1. $15
Very pretty aromas of raspberry sorbet, vanilla, dough and roasted hazelnuts. Very fine mousse; rich and creamy. The raspberry flavors are delicate, and the wine has a lightness and elegance that are first class. Mostly Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier with trace amounts of Chardonnay and Pinot Blanc. Best Buy.  — S.H.  (12/15/1999)
