This is still very youthful and primary, with just hints of complexity. Plum and licorice shine brightly in this mouthfilling wine that somehow manages to be muscular yet silky at the same time. Roughly 60% Syrah, 40% Grenache, from vines 35–45 years old. Drink now–2015.

Nicely fruity up front, with red berries and cherries leading the way. But it’s not a simple fruit-bomb. It offers plenty of spice as well as a rich, creamy texture and soft tannins. Drink now–2010.

Domaine Daniel et Denis Alary 2005 La Gerbaude Red (Côtes du Rhône)
Everything about this wine screams quality, from its impressively dark color to its precise aromas of dark fruit and spice. Plum, blueberry and blackberry flavors glide across the palate, buoyed by a creamy, rich texture. Sure, it could be more complex, but this is an immensely likeable wine; a real find.
