Domaine de la Janasse 2003 Vieilles Vignes Red (Châteauneuf-du-Pape)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $100
From four parcels of vines, all giving different characteristics to the final blend. This is a beautifully structured wine, almost charming at first, and then packing an intense mouthful of fresh, balanced and dangerously delicious fruit. There is a touch of new wood, but the fruit is the star of this great wine. Imported by European Cellars.  — R.V.  (12/31/2005)

Domaine de la Janasse 2001 Vieilles Vignes Red (Châteauneuf-du-Pape)

  1. $110
Here is a wine that shows the serious side of Châteauneuf. While the fruit is certainly huge, what is equally apparent is the restrained power and the rich, concentrated tannins. This is a style of wine that would appeal to a Zinfandel lover.  — R.V.  (3/1/2004)

Domaine de la Janasse 2003 Red (Châteauneuf-du-Pape)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $45
The Sabons have carved a great reputation for their wines over the past 20 years, and this wine continues that in fine style. Rich and perfumed, it manages to combine weight with a finesse that belies the hugeness of the 2003 vintage. There are fine tannins, ripe black fruits, hints of wood and a great sense of ageworthiness. A wine to savor in 10 years. Imported…  — R.V.  (12/31/2005)

Domaine de la Janasse 2001 Chaupin Grenache (Châteauneuf-du-Pape)

  1. $53
A 100% Grenache wine which is made from 60-year-old vines grown on sandy soil, giving a mineral character to the wine. At this stage, when it is young, it is quite austere, but the tannins and big, dry fruit flavors promise a great future for this classic Châteauneuf.  — R.V.  (3/1/2004)

Domaine de la Janasse 2001 Tradition Grenache (Châteauneuf-du-Pape)

  1. $40
This is the standard cuvée of Châteauneuf from Domaine de la Janasse, but what a terrific, powerful wine it is. Made from different parcels of Grenache, it has flavors of dark plums, solid tannins and intense black fruits.  — R.V.  (3/1/2004)

Domaine de la Janasse 2002 White (Châteauneuf-du-Pape)

  1. $18
A blend of Grenache Blanc, Clairette and Rousanne, fermented in wood. The result is a complete fruit salad of flavors: apricots, quince and white peaches. Deceptively powerful and intensely aromatic.  — R.V.  (3/1/2004)

Domaine de la Janasse 2001 Les Garrigues Grenache (Côtes du Rhône Villages)

  1. $30
A wine that is made from 100% Grenache, giving intense herbal aromas and concentrated, solid fruit. For a Côtes-du-Rhône, this is a big, powerful wine.  — R.V.  (3/1/2004)

Domaine de la Janasse 2004 Red (Côtes du Rhône)

  1. $13
Known more its Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Domaine de la Janasse also makes a solid Côtes-du-Rhône. This vintage is loaded with rich, kirsch-like fruit on the nose, then adds in a creamy, supple texture and hints of spice in the mouth. Picks up traces of dark chocolate and slight bitterness on the finish.  — J.C.  (11/15/2006)
