This is a delicious wine, full of ripe southern perfumes, layered with black figs, dark acidity and blackberry jelly. It is powerful, sweetly fruited (although the tannins keep it dry) and solidly ripe.

All reviewers agreed that this wine could use 3–5 years before it’s at its peak, but there’s plenty to like in the meantime. Leather, sour berry, and assorted "candy-box" chocolates comprise the bouquet. Mouthfeel is rich and full, but structured, with plenty of black-cherry, saddle-leather and tar flavors. Finishes dry and chalky, and on the hard side.

An intense wine, superconcentrated, with very rich fruit, layers of dark tannins and wood, and fruit flavors that concentrate on dark plums, black figs and ripe blackberries. The dryness and the finishing acidity show how this wine needs to age.

The Clos du Val owned Domaine de Nizas goes for a full-bodied style of rosé, but manages to pull it off because the fruit is so vibrant and lively. Wild strawberries dominate, with acidity, a touch of caramel and minerality.

Velvety texture with strong but not overly astringent tannins. A big, intense nose loaded with black raspberries, chocolate pudding and accents of menthol. The mouth offers suggestions of violets and spice along with dark friut, and leads into a lingering finish. A complex and immensely satisfying selection for the price.

Caux is near the city of Montpellier in eastern Languedoc, a rare appellation used by Nizas for this old-vine Carignan. It’s a big, bold, perfumed wine, showing the intensity of flavor that comes from these low-yielding vines. It’s smooth and velvety, with dusty tannins underneath.
