Very rich for a Côtes-du-Rhône, even one of villages status, with a creamy, almost liquorous mouthfeel. The heat of the vintage has made for dried fruit notes of date and prune, but there’s enough enlivening spice so that the wine avoids heaviness. A bit like liquid fruitcake. Drink now.

This 100% Syrah from Les Aphillanthes is smoky and slightly herbal, offering wonderfully complex hints to go along with bold blueberry flavors. A bit chunky, but full-bodied and winsome, with fruit flavors that pump out through the long finish. Drink now–2012.

Domaine Les Aphillanthes 2003 Cuvée des Galets Red (Côtes du Rhône Villages)
Maybe a touch lighter than this domaine’s Vieilles Vignes bottling, but very similar in quality, with fruit that tends toward cranberries and cherries rather than prunes or dates. Livelier and still compelling, with subtle spice notes from start to finish. The blend is 60% Grenache, 20% Syrah and 20% Mourvèdre.

One-third each Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre, the 2006 shows more red fruit than usual for this estate, but still blends in some dark chocolate notes. This medium-bodied, supple wine is ready to drink now and over the next few years.
