Domaine Vacheron 2008 Les Romains Sauvignon Blanc (Sancerre)
The name of the wine, the Romans, reminds us that Sancerre was once a Roman hilltop stronghold. The wine is crisply, tautly mineral, a pure expression of citrus and grapefruit flavors, an intense, beautifully executed wine. Worth aging for 2–3 years.

While Vacheron is famed for its reds, the whites are of an equal, if not greater, class. This big, dense, rounded wine is from one of the sunniest vineyards in Sancerre, and that shows in its power and richness. The fruits are tropical, white peach, kiwi and green plums, with just a hint of yeast. Let this age for a year.

Intense herbal and green flavors are balanced by an array of white fruits, touches of pears, currants, white peaches, and a nutty character which rounds out the taut character of the fruits and tannins. Very concentrated acidity to finish.

Domaine Vacheron 2008 Sauvignon Blanc (Sancerre)
Intensely herbaceous aromas are followed by crisp herb and green fruit flavors. There is an extra element of balanced richness from the peach juice ripeness, while the wine is suffused with a great sweet apple skin texture.

Domaine Vacheron 2004 Belle Dame Pinot Noir (Sancerre)

$60
A full bodied, rich Pinot Noir, from a small 4-acre parcel, packed with solid tannins, bright, bitter cherry flavors and a definite high toast wood element. This is Vacheron’s top red cuvée, and it does need several years to soften, open out and lose its raw wood edge.

A heavily wooded wine, very juicy with high acidity. At the moment, it is only wood. But given Vacheron’s reputation for long-lived reds (20 years or more), this powerful wine could develop slowly and well. Wait for at least 2 years.

Domaine Vacheron 2008 Pinot Noir (Sancerre)
Vacheron are masters of red Sancerre, and this wine lives up to the billing. There are impressively ripe fruits, flavors of the brightest berries and a sweet, pure character, emphasized by the acidity and underlined by wood.
