Domaine Viret 2003 Emergence Saint-Maurice Red (Côtes du Rhône Villages)
-
$40
Very ripe; it shows a touch of alcoholic warmth, but it’s also richly textured, velvety and supple. Hints of mint and chocolate accent the lush cassis flavors that glide across the palate. A blend of 50% Grenache, 25% Mourvèdre and 25% Syrah.

Domaine Viret 2004 Renaissance Saint-Maurice Red (Côtes du Rhône Villages)

$21
A bit less cinnamon and clove than the 2003, with more forward, darker fruit flavors like black cherry and plum, yet also more black pepper. Brighter acidity makes it seem more lively and complete. Drink now–2010.

Domaine Viret 2003 Renaissance Saint-Maurice Red (Côtes du Rhône Villages)

$22
A blend of 80% Grenache and the rest Syrah and Mourvèdre that matured in vat for close to two years, this is a tremendously spice-driven wine, offering plenty of clove and cinnamon aromatics. Yet it's also round and supple in the mouth, marked by cherry and leather flavors that form a solid base for the spicy complexities.

Domaine Viret 2004 Maréotis Saint-Maurice Red (Côtes du Rhône Villages)
-
$33
This blend of 60% Grenache and 40% Syrah is more structured than the Renaissance bottling. Starts with almond and smoke aromas, then features plenty of plum and blackberry fruit. A bit tough to warm up to, marked by firm tannins and crisp acidity on the finish.

Domaine Viret 2003 Les Colonnades Saint-Maurice Red (Côtes du Rhône Villages)

From a single very old parcel of Grenache, this seems a touch overripe. Despite Philippe Viret’s admonition that this wine develops a lot of mineral with age, at this stage I found it raisiny and chocolaty; a good chunky wine, but not particularly stylish.
