Dominio de Tares 2006 Bembibre Mencía (Bierzo)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $45
Score Chasers: Spain 2011
If you like lusty, ripe, full-bodied reds, then scoop this up because it’s excellent and priced to sell. The nose is rich, crusty and minerally, with a ton of black fruit. The palate is layered and creamy, with ultra- ripe, concentrated black fruit, chocolate and café mocha flavors. Pure and deep; drinkable now and over the next few years.  — M.S.  (7/1/2011)

Dominio de Tares 2004 Bembibre Mencía (Bierzo)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $50
This blend of six vineyards is great. It’s dense and full of minerality, finely polished leather and pure berry aromas. The palate sings a melodious tune that begins with creamy oaky notes and expands to more defined plum, vanilla and fine herb flavors. The ’04 Bembibre is a rounder, more complete version than the impressive but more austere 2002 (the last Bembibre…  — M.S.  (11/1/2007)

Dominio de Tares 2007 Exaltos Cepas Viejas Mencía (Bierzo)

Enthusiast 100 2011
Deep, dark and oaky smelling, with tons of mocha on top of ripe black fruit aromas. There’s both heft and elegance to this wine, that and coffee, spice and exotic black fruit flavors. Finishes toasty and spicy, with a rich, chunky, structured feel. Impressive; drink now through 2013.  — M.S.  (10/1/2011)

Dominio de Tares 2004 Tares P.3 Mencía (Bierzo)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $90
Very dark for Mencía, which indicates that it is an old-vines wine of pedigree. The nose is composed of cigar box, licorice gumdrop, balsam wood and berry fruit. In a word it’s hedonistic, and the richness and full-bodied berry and plum flavors may just bowl you over. It’s definitely more oaky than many, but it still qualifies as Bierzo at its most bountiful.  — M.S.  (11/1/2007)

Dominio de Tares 2002 Bembibre Mencía (Bierzo)

  1. $45
Lush on the nose, with wild game, smoke and blackberry filling every void. Almost Syrah-like in its weight, more so than the other Mencía wines that are making a statement. Which only means that it’s chewy, chocolaty and creamy. Finishes slightly short, with bitter fudge and vanilla shadings.  — M.S.  (6/1/2005)

Dominio de Tares 2001 Cepas Viejas Mencía (Bierzo)

  1. $26
Talk about precious aromatics; this one sports mint, licorice, dark cocoa and spicy oak. The color is deep, the body full, and the leather, meat and cinnamon-based woodspice flavors sublime. Made from the Mencia grape, so it’s a bit shy on the midpalate. Otherwise, it’s flawless.  — M.S.  (12/31/2004)

Dominio de Tares 2006 Exaltos Cepas Viejas Mencía (Bierzo)

  1. $32
Chunky and rubbery smelling at first, then out comes black fruit, oak and licorice in spades. This is a modern, dark wine from old Mencía vines that’s very tasty and rolls across the palate with ease. It’s a little syrupy and very ripe, with hints of herbs on the finish as well as cocoa and fig. Drink now through 2013.  — M.S.  (7/1/2011)

Dominio de Tares 2004 Baltos Mencía (Bierzo)

  1. $16
Violets, boysenberry and coffee make for an open, plump bouquet that functions as a red carpet for anyone willing to take the plunge. The palate is equally seductive and round, with deep, dark-fruit flavors topped with toast and chocolate. Stylish but forward; it’s a wine most anyone should like.  — M.S.  (9/1/2006)
