Don Miguel Gascón 2003 President's Blend Malbec (Mendoza)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $22
Anyone looking for a whole lot of wine for not too much cash will be pleased with this blend, named for former Argentinean president Juan Perón, husband of Evita. Back to the wine: it’s rich, heady and borderline opulent, with ripe tannins, plumpness and hedonistic fruit. Incorporates 10% Cabernet and 5% Syrah. Imported by Pasternak Wine Imports.  — M.S.  (6/1/2006)

A bright purple luster draws you in, and the nose is bright, clean, focused and full of wild blackberry. Balanced in the mouth, with size and tannin but plenty of acidity and fruit. Tastes of blackberry, vanilla cream, molasses and spice, and the finish brings it on home. Sincere and excellent for the price.  — M.S.  (2/1/2010)

Don Miguel Gascón 2005 Viognier (Mendoza)

  • Best Buy
  1. $13
For some time now this wine has been the measuring stick for Argentine Viognier, and the ’05 vintage is one of the best yet. Mineral, melon and peaches coat the bouquet, while the balanced palate is full of sweet melon flavors. This is a warm, ripe, slightly creamy wine that’s meant to be drunk as soon as possible, before it loses steam. Imported by Pasternak Wine…  — M.S.  (6/1/2006)

Don Miguel Gascón 2000 Malbec (Mendoza)

  • Best Buy
  1. $10
Malbec, a Bordeaux grape often used in blending, makes its mark in the Argentina's Mendoza region, where it yields sturdy, flavorful reds characterized by inky color and chewy texture. The black cherry fruit has an appealing coffee-chocolate overlay and dense mouthfeel. Tangy, peppery tannins and an earthy note on the back end show a more rustic side of the…  — W.E.  (11/15/2001)

Don Miguel Gascón 2007 Malbec (Mendoza)

  1. $12
Always a good buy and always big and husky, Gascón is a saturated and dark wine but one with good balance and texture. The nose features cola, boysenberry and density, while the palate is sweet and floral, with big berry flavors. Quite good for a fat young Malbec.  — M.S.  (12/31/2008)

Round and smoky, as is the house style. There’s also the full allotment of asphalt, leather and black-plum aromas. Full and ripe on the palate, with additional plum and black cherry flavors. Finishes with a tingle, the result of slightly sharp acidity.  — M.S.  (10/1/2004)

Don Miguel Gascón 2003 Syrah (Mendoza)

  • Best Buy
  1. $12
Dark and saturated; it’s black as night, a thick, chewy wine. The bouquet is overflowing with fresh-roasted coffee and earth, while the meaty palate is deep, with blackberry and black currant flavors. Plenty of warmth, pepper and vanilla on the finish. A big, extracted bruiser, very much in this brand’s style.  — M.S.  (10/1/2004)

Don Miguel Gascón 2004 Malbec (Mendoza)

  1. $13
Bright purple in color, with heavy smoke and rubber aromas that together come across as bacon and bitter chocolate. Cassis, plum and tobacco rest comfortably on the palate, while the finish is grapy, extracted and toasty. In recent years this wine has carved out its own style, and this vintage fits the model. Imported by Pasternak Wine Imports.  — M.S.  (11/15/2005)
