Dr. H. Thanisch (Erben Müller-Burggraef) 2006 Berncasteler Doctor Beerenauslese Goldkap Riesling (Mosel-Saar-Ruwer)

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $160
The wonderful minerality imparted by the Doctor vineyard is somehow able to keep this intensely sweet, rich wine from being heavy or cloying. Dried apricot notes mark the nose, followed by scents of mango, peach and pineapple; this wine virtually gushes with sweet tropical fruit and honey, yet maintains a wonderful sense of balance throughout.  — J.C.  (12/15/2007)

Dr. H. Thanisch (Erben Müller-Burggraef) 2006 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Beerenauslese Riesling (Mosel-Saar-Ruwer)

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $105
This winery has turned out a couple of terrific BAs in 2006 as the family focuses its efforts on its estate wines. Pear, peach, pineapple and spice notes lead the way, garnished by hints of dried apricots in this rich, viscous offering. Finishes long and mouthwatering, not cloying at all—a remarkable achievement in a wine this sweet. Drink now–2040 or beyond.  — J.C.  (12/15/2007)

Seems a bit simple at first, mounding up fruity scents of apple, pineapple and pear. But give it some time to develop and it adds complex mineral and spice nuances. The wine is fairly rich and full-bodied, but the sweetness is balanced by crisp acids. Long in the finish and packed with dry mineral notes.  — J.C.  (12/1/2006)

Dr. H. Thanisch (Erben Müller-Burggraef) 2005 Bernkasteler Lay Auslese Riesling (Mosel-Saar-Ruwer)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $35
The price is right on this auslese from one of the Mosel’s historic estates. Aromas and flavors of spiced baked apples provide ample fruit, while citrus notes give balance and hints of corn oil give the impression of minerality. Lush and creamy on the palate, with mouth-tingling acidity on the finish.  — J.C.  (2/1/2007)

Dr. H. Thanisch (Erben Müller-Burggraef) 2005 Berncasteler Doctor Spätlese Riesling (Mosel-Saar-Ruwer)

  1. $50
A top-notch effort, this wine blends fruit and minerality almost inseparably. Stone fruit and honey notes provide the weight, while apple and pineapple are the muscle and a powerful slaty minerality is the spine. This is rich, even a little bit heavy, but luscious, and surprisingly clean and fresh on the finish.  — J.C.  (6/2/2007)

Dr. H. Thanisch (Erben Müller-Burggraef) 2006 Bernkasteler Graben Spätlese Riesling (Mosel-Saar-Ruwer)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $29
This is a rather big and burly wine for a Mosel spätlese, weighing in at 11.5% alcohol. And while it shows plenty of power, it also shows nuance in its aromas and flavors, which range from baked fruit, honey and spiced marmalade to oily, mineral essences. Has the concentration to age, but the balance of sugar and alcohol may not hold in the long run—drink it over…  — J.C.  (8/1/2008)

Dr. H. Thanisch (Erben Müller-Burggraef) 2005 Brauneberger Juffer-Sonnenuhr Spätlese Riesling (Mosel-Saar-Ruwer)

Plump and succulent, this is a deceptively easy wine. Ripe apple, pear and melon flavors make it seem simple, but underneath the flesh is a spine of bright acids and slatey minerality. Zesty lime and ripe orange notes give length to the crisp, lingering finish. Both this wine and the auslese are great.  — J.C.  (12/1/2006)

Dr. H. Thanisch (Erben Müller-Burggraef) 2009 Berncasteler Doctor Auslese Riesling (Mosel)

  1. $55
Rich without being overly sweet, this wine’s aromas are redolent of dried apricots, with a hint of shiitake mushroom as well. Gingery spice balances the honeyed richness on the palate, and extends through the long finish.  — J.C.  (3/1/2012)
