Dr. Wagner 2006 Saarburger Rausch Spätlese Goldkap Riesling (Mosel-Saar-Ruwer)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $29
Some German vineyards suffered from low acidity in 2006, but Wagner’s portion of the Saarburger Rausch was obviously not one of them. This is unusually light, tart and fresh for the vintage, with classic green apple, citrus and slate aromas and flavors and incredible focus. Very refreshing. Imported by Chapin Cellars, LLC.  — J.C.  (8/1/2008)

Dr. Wagner 2006 Ockfener Bockstein Spätlese Goldkap Riesling (Mosel-Saar-Ruwer)

  1. $29
This is a prototypical Saar Riesling, with classic green apple and citrus flavors underscored by slate-driven minerality that lingers for a long time on the finish. Despite the sensation of plumpness, the wine is light on its feet. Imported by Chapin Cellars, LLC.  — J.C.  (8/1/2008)

Dr. Wagner 2006 Saarburger Rausch Auslese Goldkap Riesling (Mosel-Saar-Ruwer)

  1. $46
For being a goldkap, this is not especially lush or botrytized. Instead, it features a fine balance of acidity, which enlivens the green apple and citrus flavors and gives them extra poignancy. This is crisply balanced and mouthwatering on the finish.  — J.C.  (3/1/2009)

The delicacy of the cool Saar valley comes through wonderfully in this off-dry kabinett. Crushed-stone aromas lead the way, followed by zesty, citrusy flavors that elegantly interweave with mineral notes before lingering gracefully on the finish.  — J.C.  (3/1/2009)

Dr. Wagner 2006 Ockfener Bockstein Kabinett Riesling (Mosel-Saar-Ruwer)

  1. $20
A very well made and typical kabinett, with moderate residual sugar and crisp, tight acids. Pineapple and citrus aromas carry a whiff of kerosene as well, and the wine finishes with green apple and lime flavors. Imported by Chapin Cellars, LLC.  — J.C.  (6/1/2008)
