Duck Pond 1997 Cabernet Franc (Columbia Valley (WA))

  1. $95
From a single vineyard in a warm part of the valley, a massive wine. It’s hard to put into words how fruity it is without using the word “bomb,” but that’s not a pejorative in this case. It’s huge, but balanced, dry, harmonious, dramatic and very oaky. Drink it now with full-flavored foods.  — S.H.  (12/31/2003)

Great color, dense purple/garnet, and thick scents of blackberries tell you this is a heckuva good $12 wine. Hits the palate with a solid grip, the dense blackberry fruit perked up with white pepper and toast, and finishes big and smoky, with tarry tannins.  — P.G.  (11/15/2004)

Opens with very nice, clean, spicy Chard aromas of apples and peaches, and drinks long and rich. The fruit runs from apples through quince and mango, and there’s some toasty oak, but not too much. Best Buy.  — S.H.  (9/1/2000)

Duck Pond 1998 Fries' Desert Wind Vineyard Merlot (Columbia Valley (WA))

Though it’s an Oregon winery, the vineyard is in Washington’s Columbia Valley. It’s value-priced and soundly made, with ripe cherries leading off a chocolate and coffee nose. Dry, chalky tannins complete the picture, with plenty of spice and wood flavors behind soft cherry fruit. Best Buy.  — P.G.  (6/1/2001)

Duck Pond 2005 Pinot Gris

  1. $12
Light and lemony, this graceful wine shows an elegant, northern Italian personality rather than the meaty, fleshy style more often found in Oregon Pinot Gris. Pear drop scents and fresh pear flavors dominate the entry, and at this price deliver plenty of clean flavor. Mostly estate-grown fruit, with an average yield of just over two tons per acre, the wine’s…  — P.G.  (11/15/2006)

A very pleasant offering from Duck Pond, this is lightly toasty, moderately fruity, broad on the palate, with a gentle mix of pear and apple flavors. Smooth and drinking at its peak.  — P.G.  (10/1/2010)

Duck Pond 2005 Jory Cuvée Pinot Noir

  1. $30
This Pinot Noir, named for a particular soil type in the Willamette valley, is scented strongly of the lumber smell you get at a building supplies store. There is a simple but pleasing layer of strawberry/raspberry fruit hidden in the wine’s core. Perhaps a year or two of bottle age will pull things together.  — P.G.  (4/1/2008)

Duck Pond 2006 Pinot Noir

  1. $20
Tart and forward, with cranberry and raspberry fruit front and center, this is a tasty, acidic and lightly spicy effort that shows some nice precision. It’s not a big wine, but balanced and based upon sharp acids that carry the fruit and cut through the finish.  — P.G.  (4/1/2008)
