Duncan Peak 1998 Cabernet Sauvignon (Mendocino County)

  1. $35
I have admired this property for many years. It comes from a mountain in Mendocino that should have its own appellation. In this dismal vintage the vineyard ripened the grapes enough to evoke blackberries, although the olive flavors are strong. The tannin-acid balance is exciting and suggests mid-term aging. A winery to watch.  — S.H.  (6/1/2002)

Duncan Peak 2003 Petite Sirah (Mendocino County)

  1. $25
There are structural similarities here with Napa Cabernet. The wine is dry, lush in tannins, balanced in acidity, with ripe but controlled black currant and cherry flavors. Yes, there’s a certain briary, wild character, but this is really one heck of a good wine. Drink now through 2009 for its youthful fruit.  — S.H.  (10/1/2006)

Duncan Peak 2001 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon (Mendocino County)

  1. $35
Be warned: This is a very tannic wine. It’s so dry and astringent, it makes your mouth pucker, which begs to the question, will it age? The answer is a provisional yes. It’s balanced and feels good and rich, and if you chew, there’s a lot of blackberry fruit. Best to hold until 2008.  — S.H.  (10/1/2006)

Duncan Peak 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon (Mendocino County)

  1. $25
Drinks kind of hard and raw now, a very dry, tannic wine. You’ll find pretty flavors of blackberries and cherries, but it seems to need time to throw some sediment and chill. Try holding for a few years.  — S.H.  (10/1/2006)
