Edmeades 1999 Zeni Vineyard Zinfandel (Mendocino Ridge)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $25
An extraordinary wine, and not just because it wears its 16.4% alcohol so well. The raspberry and cassis flavors are rapturously delicious. It seems almost a crime for wine to taste this good. At the same time, the round, soft mouthfeel and dry, dusty tannins are textbook perfect. From 90-year-old vines.  — S.H.  (11/1/2002)

Edmeades 1996 Zeni Vineyard Zinfandel (Mendocino)

  1. $25
From an underrated North Coast winery making some of the best Zins in the state. You’ll go wild over the bold complexity of this beauty. Packs twice the power of most Zins and gets away with it. This is a wine to show a visitor from foreign shores what California Zin is all about.  — S.H.  (9/1/1999)

Edmeades 1998 Ciapusci Vineyard Zinfandel (Mendocino Ridge)

  1. $25
Head-trained, century-old vines, provide intense scents with old vine herbal, herbaceous accents. Watermelon, hay and strawberries, intensely extracted and 17.5% alcohol. This is over-the-top winemaking, with powerful old vine fruit, and a big, extracted finish, with lingering toasty, hazelnut and vanilla highlights.  — P.G.  (3/1/2001)

Edmeades 1998 Eagle Point Vineyard Zinfandel (Mendocino)

  1. $24
There’s 19% Syrah and 5% Petite Sirah blended in, making for a succulent wine, with spicy, lively fruit leading the charge. There’s enough acid to give it structure and balance, but not so much that the wine seems edgy or sour. Full bodied, mouthfilling, flavorful and distinctive.  — P.G.  (3/1/2001)

Edmeades 1999 Ciapusci Zinfandel (Mendocino Ridge)

  1. $25
They say these vines are 121 years old, and certainly, the wine they produce is concentrated. The winemaker, Van Williamson, finds nutmeg, fir, white pepper, tobacco, raspberry and strawberries, which sounds about right. It’s also a little more tart than the magnificent Zeni bottling.  — S.H.  (11/1/2002)

Edmeades 2006 Perli Vineyard Zinfandel (Mendocino Ridge)

  1. $30
Made in the Edmeades style of high alcohol and exceptional ripeness, this is a powerfully explosive Zin. Fully dry, it’s packed with black currant, cassis, plum jam, dark chocolate and spice flavors that are wrapped into hard tannins. Will soften in time. Best now through 2012.  — S.H.  (4/1/2009)
