El Coto 2004 Real Reserva Red (Rioja)
Price
$60
A success for El Coto! This is a dark and lusty wine that falls squarely into the Nuevo Classico style. It’s smoky and dark on the nose, with mineral notes blending with chocolate and ripe berry aromas. Lushness carries the palate, which rests on blackberry and cassis flavors. Controlled, weighty and concentrated. A big wine for big food and big occasions.

El Coto 2001 Coto de Imaz Gran Reserva Tempranillo (Rioja)

Price

Toasty and elegant from the beginning. The nose breathes Christmas spice and mature berry fruits, while the palate deals a persistent structure and acidity for added spine. Tastes a little rooty and savory, with root beer and chocolate notes to the finish. Drink now or hold thru 2016.

You’re going to like this masculine, well-oaked blend of 80% Tempranillo with 10% each Graciano and Garnacha. It’s got modern touches but a lot of tradition as well. The wine is rich and round, with tobacco, coffee, chocolate and earth creating depth and character. With fine mouthfeel and a solid finish, you can drink now or hold a few more years.

El Coto 1995 Coto de Imaz Gran Reserva Tempranillo (Rioja)
Price
$38
Seductive and classy aromas of sandalwood, cola, spice, licorice and leather amount to pretty much everything you could ask for. Ripe and complex in terms of its earth and tree-fruit flavors. Finishes svelte and sturdy, but with ample vanilla, toffee and tobacco nuances. Classic gran reserva. Imported by Frederick Wildman & Sons, Ltd.

El Coto 1996 Coto de Imaz Gran Reserva Tempranillo (Rioja)

Price
$39
Broad-shouldered and muscled-up, this hearty wine seems more youthful than it is. The nose is spicy and full of lively berry aromas, while the palate is laced with red cherry, raspberry and vanilla. It’s a classic gran reserva with dried qualities and spice. It’s right on the money.

El Coto 1997 Coto Real Reserva Tempranillo (Rioja)
Price
$45
Bright, expressive, fleshy—all words that came up again and again describing this wine’s fruit, from nose to finish. The core is mostly blackberry, with mixed plums and a dash of oak; it’s medium-full, mouthfilling but not huge. Finsihes with some chewy tannins, and an almost beefy flavor. Perhaps too big to fully appreciate now; best drunk from 2005. —D.M.

El Coto 2000 Coto Real Reserva Red (Rioja)
Price
$48
There’s no shortage of barrel-driven hickory, coffee and chocolate on this modern-style Rioja, but there’s also a spike of green on the nose and at the core of the flavor profile. Surrounding that is bright blackberry, amplified tannins and bursting acidity. Needs air upon opening—that, or more time in the cellar.

El Coto 2006 Crianza Tempranillo (Rioja)
Best Buy
Price
$12
An oaky, modern-style wine with a staunch mocha and vanilla influence, but the fruit is ripe and rich enough to handle it. Spicy and grainy on the nose, with vanilla and resin seeping through. The palate remains woody but is full of berry flavors, while the omnipresent barrel influence carries onto the rich, ripe finish.
