Elio Grasso 1999 Ginestra Vigna Casa Maté Nebbiolo (Barolo)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $53
Turns the neat trick of being big and mouthfilling yet not heavy, packing in spiced prune and date flavors wrapped in dark chocolate and tar. The finish shows this wine’s true potential, ending with big fruit, big tannins, mouthwatering acids and great length.  — W.E.  (4/2/2004)

Elio Grasso 2006 Gavarini Chiniera Nebbiolo (Barolo)

The Ferrero factory in Alba fills the air with delicious aromas of melted chocolate and roasted hazelnut. Those are the same fragrances you will enjoy here backed by standard Nebbiolo tones of wild berry, cola and earth. The tannins are drying, firm and help keep the palate clean.  — M.L.  (12/1/2010)

Elio Grasso 2007 Gavarini Chiniera Nebbiolo (Barolo)

From the Monforte d’Alba area, Barolo Gavarini Chiniera shows overripe notes of strawberry jam and raspberry roll-up set against sweet spice and candied fruit or prune. The wine ends with a sweet smoke note set over a plush, rich texture.  — M.L.  (9/1/2011)

Elio Grasso 1998 Vigna Dei Grassi Dolcetto (Dolcetto d'Alba)

  1. $14
The nose offers cherry and blackberry aromas, and the flavors are more cherry, with engaging tea and tar notes. Very nice mouthfeel with dried fruit and a dusty rose element on the finish.  — W.E.  (4/1/2000)

Elio Grasso 1996 Vigna Martini Barbera (Barbera d'Alba)

  1. $21
Pure and full cherry fruit, but toast and menthol from the oak prevail on the nose. The fruit comes up on the palate with classic cocoa and licorice accents. Full mouthfeel and a long finish with a minty note. A knock-out for devotees of the barrique style, but the fruit could shine more.  — W.E.  (4/1/2000)
