Elk Cove

Founded in 1974 by Pat and Joe Campbell, Elk Cove Vineyards is one of Oregon's oldest and most respected wine producers. With over 220 acres of estate vineyards, Elk Cove Winery strives to produce hand crafted, estate grown wines that can rival the best in the world. According to our Elk Cove wine reviews, Elk Cove has remained a family owned and operated winery since its inception. Winemaker Adam Godlee Campbell joined forces with his parents in 1995 to produce outstanding Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris Elk Cove wines. Elk Cove Vineyards uses sustainable agricultural practices on all its vineyards, and all fruit is hand harvested. In the winery, Elk Cove utilizes a gravity flow system to protect the inherent qualities of the estate grown fruit. Elk Cove produces wine from a half dozen various grape varieties planted over five Northern Willamette Vineyards. However it is their single vineyard Pinot Noirs that consistently are found atop our Elk Cove Wine Ratings. Browse our Elk Cove wine buying guide below to see which wines are right for you.

Elk Cove 2006 Reserve Pinot Noir

  1. $100
This wine explodes from the glass with aromatic scents of caramel, cherry, sweet grain and many more nuanced layers. This is the wine you pull out for a special occasion. The flavors are beautifully integrated, a rolling mix of berries, spicy herbs, wood, earth and caramel.  — P.G.  (11/15/2008)

Elk Cove 2001 Pinot Gris

  1. $15
Pinot gris as it should be — ripe and full-bodied, with expressive flavors of fresh pears, spiced with cinnamon. Rich and satisfying, yet tangy enough to accompany even delicate seafood. This is a home run, with just enough of a hint of barrel to give it a finishing kiss of butterscotch.  — P.G.  (8/1/2003)

Elk Cove 2005 Pinot Gris

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $18
Elk Cove makes one of the most refreshing, crisp and nuanced Pinot Gris in the state. This is an excellent bottle, lively and clean, with mixed fruit flavors of pear, melon, kiwi and white peach. It is concentrated but not heavy or thick; the magic of Adam Campbell’s winemaking is his ability to perfectly balance and showcase the exact ripeness of his fruit…  — P.G.  (9/1/2006)

This is an elegant, refreshing style scented with a lush nose that cleverly blends cut fruit, blossom, citrus and a hint of mineral. The mixed fruit flavors continue on the palate—pear, melon, peach and spice, perfectly balanced and ripe.  — P.G.  (11/15/2007)

Elk Cove 2009 Estate Riesling

  1. $19
From old vines that offer more texture, steely minerality and nuance than young vines can deliver. You might find less fullness to the fruit, but this more than compensates with its robust depth. Lemon polish, Key lime, a bit of grapefruit and much more.  — P.G.  (10/1/2011)

Elk Cove 2001 Windhill Pinot Noir

  1. $32
Smoky aromas kick start things, and then comes a blast of tar, char and pure red fruit. The deep, structured, properly acidic palate is pure and healthy as can be, with cherry, raspberry and chocolate flavors coming together perfectly. And the rich, oaky finish is just as it should be. With zest, style and class, this is a fine domestic Pinot.  — M.S.  (9/1/2003)

Elk Cove 2005 Roosevelt Vineyard Pinot Noir

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $55
Planted in 1993, this four-acre, cool-climate vineyard had a relatively late harvest in 2005, which can, in the Pacific Northwest, result in more European, vertically structured wines. This is wrapped up tight, and is far away from the sweet, succulent fruit of California Pinot Noir, but its pleasures are many and varied. Clear and bright, its berry-cherry fruit is…  — P.G.  (4/1/2008)

Elk Cove 2006 Windhill Vineyard Pinot Noir

  1. $48
This is a lovely bottle, from a vineyard planted in 1974. It’s an almost-perfect mix of flower, fruit and stone; the alcohol is a surprising 14.9% alcohol, but the wine does not taste that hot. It mixes the flavors elegantly into a wine that captures the elegance of the grape along with bright fruit, crisp acids and just the right amount of herb.  — P.G.  (11/15/2008)
