This is the winery’s reserve, and it shows more tannin, earthy herb, grip and funk than the ‘777’ bottling. It’s a flavorful wine, pungently aromatic, and it begins with more complexity than it shows in the back half. It may well soften up and smooth out with another few years in the bottle; hard to tell at this point.

The number refers to the particular clone of Pinot Noir. It’s a tightly wound effort, showing wild berry and black cherry fruit, annotated with black licorice and herb. Straight-ahead, some muscular fruit, it finishes with a streak of vanilla.
