Enrique Mendoza 2006 Santa Rosa Reserva Red (Alicante)

  1. $50
For a mature, high-end taste of the Levante, this blend of 70% Cabernet with 15% each of Merlot and Syrah is at the top of the heap. It smells exotic and smooth, like sandalwood, baked berries and brandied plums. On the palate it feels firm and secure, with juicy, deep flavors of cassis and slow-cooked black cherry. This is a bullish red to drink now.  — M.S.  (7/1/2012)

Enrique Mendoza 2008 Santa Rosa Reserva Red (Alicante)

  1. $45
The bouquet on this blend of Cabernet, Merlot and Syrah is toasty and elevated, a clear invitation to dig in. In the mouth, the flow is silky smooth and just snappy enough, with finely etched acidity pushing raspberry, plum, herb and cocoa flavors. This is excellent in every way; drink now–2018.  — M.S.  (6/1/2013)

Enrique Mendoza 2005 Crianza Shiraz (Alicante)

  1. $20
The packaging is underwhelming, so much so that you worry that this is just another generic Shiraz from whereversville. But that’s not the case at all. The wine is sexy and smooth, with light minty aromas accenting solid berry fruit. The palate is clean and zesty, with dark-fruit flavors as well as black olive, cola and toast. Integrated and ready to drink.  — M.S.  (11/15/2008)

Enrique Mendoza 2000 Reserva Santa Rosa Red (Alicante)

  1. $35
Dark and intense is this Cabernet-Merlot-Syrah blend. The nose offers smoky leather and hot earth, but also a sweet perfume dominated by violets. Quite drinkable now, with soft tannins and easygoing black fruit. Best to get this one over the next year or two, before the fruit fades.  — M.S.  (6/1/2005)

Enrique Mendoza 2008 Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon-Shiraz (Alicante)

  1. $40
This Cabernet Sauvignon-Shiraz blend has a lot of personality and individuality. It’s full of earthy tobacco and blackberry aromas, while the texture is nice and the volume is generous. Flavors of oak-driven vanilla and cream accent core berry flavors, while there’s depth and length to the finish. Drink now.  — M.S.  (6/1/2013)

Enrique Mendoza 2006 Estrecho Monastrell (Alicante)

  1. $40
Pine and juniper aromas mix with berry and plum scents on a lively but dense and slightly volatile nose. Airing leads to an edgy, full-bodied palate with baked berry, plum and tomato flavors. This is long, lively and mildly herbal on the finish. A bit wiry and high in acid.  — M.S.  (7/1/2012)

Enrique Mendoza 2003 Moscatel de la Marina (Alicante)

A nosing reveals just about everything but the kitchen sink. There’s peanut butter, honey, mango and banana, and then later more elaborate sweet fruits rise up on the palate. Maybe too simple to be great, but very good and likable.  — M.S.  (6/1/2005)

Enrique Mendoza 2007 La Tremenda Monastrell (Alicante)

Clean, solid aromas of black cherry and berry are just what you want from Spanish Monastrell, and while this isn’t the most unique or original wine, it sure is tasty, balanced and pleasing. Flavors of lightly baked black fruits are lush, while the finish is medium-long and easygoing. Hard to find anything wrong with this affordable red from Alicante.  — M.S.  (8/1/2010)
