Equus 1999 Syrah (Paso Robles)

  1. $18
Delicious and complete, with lush, ripe fruit suggesting red raspberries and cherries harmonizing with white chocolate and various spices. Very dry, with soft but fine tannins and acids. Smooth and seductive. —S.H.  — S.H.  (2/1/2003)

Equus 1998 Syrah (Paso Robles)

  1. $22
“Nice” to one reviewer, but “a tough customer” to others, the Equus opens with cherry, smoke and tomato aromas and a touch of heat. We can thank oak, coffee and sour cherry pie flavors for the tartness in the mouth; finishes long and dry, with mineral and soft cherry flavors.  — W.E.  (11/1/2001)

Equus 2000 Viognier (Central Coast)

  1. $16
Lots of forward fruit notes of white peach, with floral scents like buttercups and spicy vanilla. Very flavorful, dry and rich, just filled with ripe fruit. Good acidity balances it out. The finish snaps to a quick end, leaving behind a clean palate.  — S.H.  (3/1/2003)

Equus 1999 James Berry Vineyard Grenache (Paso Robles)

  1. $18
Pleasant drinking fare, light in body and tannins, with a silky mouthfeel and soft acids. Notable for the persistance and intensity of its raspberry flavors. Long, sweet and delicious through the slighty hot finish, the result of high alcohol. —S.H.  — S.H.  (2/1/2003)

Equus 1999 Mourvèdre (Paso Robles)

  1. $18
This is a young, jammy wine, despite the light body and the fact that it’s three years old. Raspberry, tobacco and vanilla aromas lead to berry flavors and soft acids, although the tannins are apparent and it finishes with a rough earthiness.  — S.H.  (5/1/2003)

Equus 2000 Roussanne (Paso Robles)

  1. $16
A fruity white wine, with the rich peach and pear flavors of Chardonnay, but the lean, crisp citrus character of Sauvignon Blanc. Seems to straddle the two profiles. The finish is dry and spicy.  — S.H.  (3/1/2003)
